The fact that the bookmark was for a One Direction Larry Stylinson ABO noncon breeding dead dove* fic makes this so perfect actually.

[*They don't teach you what these terms mean in ESL, EngLang or EngLit but ykw, THEY SHOULD]

Woah, hi, lots of new people. I guess we should do some introductions? I'm a UK-born/NZ-based writer with a Masters in Writing (ecofiction), + a BA (EngLit with History) & BA(Hons)(EngLit - thesis on Tolkien's monsters). I write poetry & creative nofic, and am working on a children's fantasy novel!
I'm thrilled to have a new #poem up on the Spinoff today, and to be their first Friday Poem of 2025. I started writing this at the very end of 2023 - massive thanks to editor/NZ poetry icon Hera Lindsay Bird for picking it up for publication! #ecopoetry

One of the BEST SCENES in EngLit
She was a part of that involuntary, palpitating life, and could neither look out on it from her luxurious shelter as a mere spectator, nor hide her eyes in selfish complaining.

Hello Bluesky folk.

There are lots of *wonderful* Historians in my feed.

Are there people who identify as predominantly Literary/ EngLit focussed readers here too?

As a former teacher of EngLit, I deeply felt and appreciated this essay.
“… Before I am replaced by an automated grader, an AI tutor, and an underpaid, non-union ‘learning facilitator’ who is making 1/3 my salary to coach 3X as many students through a college experience for which, somehow, Silicon Valley will…charge even more than we do…” www.plough.com/en/topics/co...
Does Teaching Literature and Writing Have a Future?
Learning that one’s job might soon be eliminated by the emergence of an overhyped new technology puts one in good company.

Intro ...first time on here.
Hi!
Expect queer & decolonial studies discourse, unmaking the Englit canon, commentary on current events esp. India, UK, France, Aus - origin/fam/residence. Plus US.
My reads, food & scarves.
Receive flak from all sorts of constituencies. No hate-follows please; I don't.

At work I'll just be sat there like 🥲 as the copy editor replaces my conjunctive adverb with "so, " and commits various other language crimes. I know they're right to do so, but I still hear my EngLit teacher is in my head yelling "why would you publish this lazy ass shit?". 5/5

Faber are issuing a 50th anniversary edition of North. It was one of the set texts in first-year EngLit at Glasgow Uni in 1986, where our lecturer was the great Prof Butter, who taught Heaney at Queen’s. Still reading my copy 39 years later…💙📚

I suspect I'm not alone in having Steinbeck's work ruined for me by how I was taught EngLit at school, but 25 years later I'm back in it and in love.

Teaching themes and literary devices is important but studying the same book for two years (Of M&M) completely bludgeoned the wonder out of it.

Philosophicold, thorkus provocit monologgers by a master of the Englit languey.

Oh yes.

Who’s out there teaching their EngLit survey as Paradise Lost + Moby-Dick + Beloved because those three together would be all you need to blow minds 🐋
I genuinely do talk about this a fair bit. My extremely boring opinion is that Paradise Lost is the single greatest work of literature out there and I will never stop loving it.
why does nobody talk about the scene in Paradise Lost where the devils invent fiendish cannons and launch an assault on Heaven with 17th century siege weapons???

Is there a Starter Pack of specifically 'EngLit' (broadly defined) folk ?

It is the best version of Christmas Carol on so many levels

EngLit profs confirming, it’s truer to original book than any version staged

Michael Caine is brilliant & on record as happiest about that role over everything else he has ever done

On my way to our third Offer Holder Event of the season 😀

Looking forward to a day of enthusing about EngLit with like-minded folk 😀

For EngLit endless ibid. in endnotes are worse! You need page ns of novels/critics in the in-text citations but in EngLit you don't frontload everyone else who might have written about the subject: that's a social sciences practice that makes the opening page of every journal article unreadable.

My GCSE EngLit teacher said it was like instant coffee vs the "proper coffee" of Midsummer Night's Dream (which is what my class studied instead).

Off to spend the afternoon listening to our EngLit UGs read extracts from their essays

Ok I'lll bite.

While my main discipline is EngLit, my current museum edu/outreach role means I'm also a Public Historian.

Here I am just after giving a talk on medieval women to visitors. Should have ironed my shirt & added a tie in case @bbcnews came knocking looking for a #typicalhistorian
