#EngLit
My GCSE EngLit teacher said it was like instant coffee vs the "proper coffee" of Midsummer Night's Dream (which is what my class studied instead).

We had a visit at UWE by Norwegian academics a few years ago, who were keen to discuss reading comp techniques with us (EngLit) because they had noticed that NOR first-year university students struggled with sustained engagement with longer texts - not just literary, but also e.g. history, science.

The end of our first 2-day Open Weekend

Always a delight to work alongside colleagues & student ambassadors, and to talk with prospective undergraduates about our shared passion for EngLit

Today's highlight?

Hearing a student ambassador describe Lancaster's academics as 'caring and kind'

Mill on the Floss 😩😮‍💨 had to read it for EngLit in uni and it nearly killed me

… like That One Guy* in every EngLit class who wanted to endlessly debate the first chapter because he never read any further…

*gender neutral guy, YMMV

That screed is cherry picked to hell and back.

Last night I finally got to see Threads (thanks @jewelthin.bsky.social !)… my god that is bleak and brutal AF! We studied Z for Zachariah in school EngLit (2nd year High?) but don’t remember being shown any similarly-themed films like Threads. Probably just as well since it’s traumatising !

I had an Englit lecturer like that.
Huh. Maybe he was a proper academic......

For this coming academic year, we added "The Blazing World" as a set text for our core EngLit module

(to anticipate year 2's study of "Assaulted and Pursued Chastity")

Go Cavendish!
Cavendish news:

I've officially signed on to edit the (somehow non-existent) Cambridge Companion to Margaret Cavendish!!

Some of y'all will be bothered by me in the coming months; I can't wait to bring your research into undergrad classrooms and induct more scholars into the study of #MarCav

Were you PoliSci or EngLit? Did you finish?

Picked up a Barthelme novel at a thrift store during a cottage town vacation last week to relive my undergrad EngLit days. It is SUCH an 80s Man novel, might not be great, but it's 200 half-empty pages and so breezy. I want every book like that again. Slash generously I say.

Like seriously, most people I know were straight up traumatised by many of the books inflicted on them. And EngLit is the best way I know to put kids off Shakespeare or other 'classics', and many are wildly inappropriate for the ages taught at, then they wonder why people don't read much as adults.

I was very lucky that my school made the best out of the curriculum (UK) books and tried their best to get ones that weren't too bad. A couple stick with me to this day as good, thoughtful reads, but I am very aware I was extremely lucky in that. EngLit books are usually awful imhe.

Who’s out there teaching their EngLit survey as Paradise Lost + Moby-Dick + Beloved because those three together would be all you need to blow minds 🐋
I genuinely do talk about this a fair bit. My extremely boring opinion is that Paradise Lost is the single greatest work of literature out there and I will never stop loving it.
why does nobody talk about the scene in Paradise Lost where the devils invent fiendish cannons and launch an assault on Heaven with 17th century siege weapons???

30 years later, and I watched my kids reading Of Mice and Men and An Inspector Calls and that was EngLit; doing modules on the Tutors and WW1 and that was History; being taught three sciences simultaneously and not enough maths to support physics. Awful system. A levels are worse.

the foundation of her personhood has been fractured so many times that she doesn't have a concept of self without the person she depends on

It's a pity Potter's *Muse in Chains* (a humourous account of how Englit was established as an academic discipline) has fallen into oblivion.
Worth a read if you can find it in an old library.

Mostly forgotten now but that genial old hobbit Tolkien was sincerely detested by those unfortunate enough to read Englit at Oxford in the mid - 20th century.
July 24, 2026 at 8:58 AM
Not to mention the quoting of Golden Bough!! And playing with literary forms—novels, plays, glyphs that can’t be displayed by my ebook reader lollllll—and surely all the many many more references I’m not picking up because I really only know the EngLit ones 👹 So confusing and so compelling

For EngLit endless ibid. in endnotes are worse. You need page ns of novels/critics in the in-text citations but you don't frontload everyone else has written about the subject: that's a social sciences practice that makes the opening page of every journal article unreadable. Anyway MLA ftw!

July 2025

- members of my then department were getting rid of books (deemed 'personal items') and getting ready to leave individual offices for shared workspaces

July 2026

- members of my discipline are getting ready to move back into individual offices - minus 5 EngLit academics

Planned?
