Tradition dating back to the C8 records that St Luke painted a portrait of the Blessed Virgin as the first icon. The scene is in the memorial window to the stained glass artist Arthur Erridge, by J Wippell & Co, 1968 at Marks Tey, Essex, a portrait of the artist himself. 1/3

"Erridge, a rebel whose life had been exasperating lacking in persecution..."

I love how the narrator nails down the character in one half-sentence.

Who wields power over mammals and crustaceans... But run-of-the-mill is right, for all we've encountered. Trelawney, Erdleigh, Pamela, Gwinnett, Erridge... This series sets a high bar for eccentricity--not to mention names.

And sometimes the ghosts are more vivid than their living selves, like Erridge.

Stringham, ensconced at Glimber, has become another Erridge--with his own Smith in the form of Tuffy. I have a feeling the relationship is just as odd and contentious, and no way will Miss Weedon be producing any champagne. #anthonypowelltogether

#anthonypowelltogether Uncle Giles sentence about liking "the little man they've got in Germany now" and the explanations that follows on both Uncle Giles and Erridge are quite the literary and psychological achievement.

Yes! I do hope that Erridge returns to Jenkins' telescope.

St. John Clark left his money to Erridge? Nick's response: "That was certainly an eye-opener." I hope Erry uses it to save their woods. (I was getting Cherry Orchard vibes there.) Of course, Erry could do something maddeningly ridiculous with it. #anthonypowelltogether

#Anthonypowelltogether Some very funny stuff here. "'His time in Spain seems to have been a total flop. He didn’t get up to the front and he never met Hemingway.’" "The sickness gave his existence an increased reality, a deeper seriousness, elements Erridge felt denied him by his family."

#anthonypowelltogether Chapter 4 of Book 6 begins with a flurry of comedic lines that are among this work's pleasures. For example:

"Erridge, a rebel whose life had been exasperatingly lacking in persecution. . . had been deprived of all the typical grudges within the grasp of most young men." 2/

“Erridge was one of those selfish people who are practically incapable of using their self-centeredness in such a way as to gain them some public advantage.” Brilliant! God, which is worse? Erridge or the other?

Porcelain like this was at the heart of the chintz and slipcover era of decorating (1990s) I had a Texas friend, I've since cast off because of her MAGA beliefs, who had blue chinoiserie jars on every mantle and shelf. I think Huntercombe knew his stuff and Erridge didn't.

Yeah Erridge is the most important one other than Jenkins’ wife but he constantly refuses to actually talk about her so even she is more important in theory than reality

Anthony Powell’s use of “as if” constructions to give amusing nuance to dialogue is reliably very good.

these lines are charming:
lady warminster: "Erridge is not quite an Alfred."
moreland: "I was being heavily humorous."
and these nicknames: Boffles, Tuffy, and of course Baby.
