I think this explains both how he governed the state (badly, in my estimation, but in line with what he thought), and his movement leftward, slow enough but there.
His governing record was trying to compromise for the supposed greater good with the rightwing of his party and constantly eating shit from them, until he realised they were disingenuous assholes, whereupon he stopped caring about them.

I don't think those polling misses have been adequately explained… so I do worry that there could be a pervasive over-estimation of left-leaning voters across many states.
The biggest reason to think the polls are RIGHT is that otherwise-safe seats (like KS Senator) seem very worried about them.
