Mutations that enhance evolvability may open doors to faster adaptation - Nature Communications
A recent study demonstrated the existence of mutations that facilitate access to efficient evolutionary solutions. Here I discuss the implications of this finding and the potential to open a new chapter in the study of evolvability.

Lovely paper. The bug we work on, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, has *hundreds* of genes that can phase-vary (stochastically switch on and off), to allow immune evasion and adaptation to different niches within and between hosts. 1/

1. A bit of evolutionary biology.

I'm really intrigued by a new perspective piece from Steve Frank that explores connections between how natural selection creates systems that generalize and recent work in machine learning about the surprising capabilities of massively overparameterized systems.
Generalization as the great leap in evolvability: insights from machine learning
