A rifle barrel and a spacecraft use the same trick to stay pointed the right way: they spin. In October 2016, the Schiaparelli lander was spun up to 2.5 RPM and released from the ExoMars orbiter on its way to Mars. The spin kept it pointed correctly for the trip down.

Le lanceur H3 emportant la mission MMX quitte son pas de tir de nuit, entre les structures de lancement. Une flamme blanche intense jaillit à sa base, au-dessus d’épais nuages de fumée. Vue d’ensemble du décollage nocturne du lanceur H3 emportant MMX depuis Tanegashima, au Japon. Les flammes illuminent le site et se reflètent sur l’eau, tandis qu’un épais nuage de fumée s’étend vers la droite. Des palmiers se détachent au premier plan. Le lanceur H3 emportant la mission MMX s’élève dans le ciel nocturne. Son puissant panache lumineux éclaire les nuages environnants de teintes orangées.

Today we celebrate ten years since the successful Mars orbit capture for the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter.
Ten years ago, we gathered at the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt to watch a chirp sent by TGO disappear and reappear as it passed behind Mars.
And we had a mission!!

@esa.int ExoMars TGO has already been orbiting Mars for 10 years! I made a video of it a decade ago and couldn't think how the world has changed since then (and the spacecraft is still working hard – without the ExoMars rover on the surface).
