JWST method rules out moons larger than 0.1 Earth radii around exoplanet LP 890-9 c
A new analysis technique shows JWST can detect small exomoons by combining multiple transits, opening a path to future discoveries even though this search came up empty.

Combining data from multiple JWST transits is paying off. David Kipping's analysis of LP 890-9 c rules out large exomoons by averaging away instrumental noise that confounds single-transit searches. A methodological win for exomoon science.

The most sensitive search for exomoons ever - moons 2.5x smaller than Europa are excluded! And around a temperate Earth-sized planet to boot. What’s really neat is that, for the first time, we can confidently say another Earth does not enjoy total Solar eclipses.

Leiden Observatory Masters graduate Valerie Bakker leads a paper on “The Hill sphere transits of Beta Pictoris c and the search for another 1981-like event” where we (sadly) did not find circumplanetary dust… but maybe it’s already condensed into #exomoons ..? #astrodon #exoplanets

If you have a mental picture of the Sun simply doing normal star things, you're ready to imagine all the possibilities that exoplanets, exomoons, exoasteroids, exocomets (and by extension interstellar objects), etc. have to offer. This is better, I think, to make us part of the wider universe

Professor David Kipping does great videos based on his research into exoplanets and exomoons (while wearing extraordinarily tight t-shirts if that's a clincher for you).

Simulations explain why exomoons around close-in rocky planets are rare: host star tidal forces and high impact velocities destroy the debris disks needed for moon formation. This explains why searches like NASA's Kepler mission found no evidence, lowering expectations for close-in exomoons.

We are still yet to confirm exomoons so very little

set orbital period and impact geometry for a giant impact and watch the circumplanetary disk survive or vanish in the star's tidal grip. the model is a trend-fitted surrogate, not a full simulation. can you find the sweet spot where moons form?
