European Peacock butterfly
(Aglais io Linnaeus, 1758)

Found in Europe and temperate Asia as far east as Japan, each wingtip it bears a distinctive, black, blue and yellow eyespot. The underside mimicking a dead leaf.

Pretty sure this is "eyespot markings" in action -- this butterfly has markings on the underside of its wings (not well shown in video) that look like owl eyes. Kestrels are OH SHIT AN OWL GONNA EAT US FUCK FUCK OH GOD IT GOT BIGGER FUCK

Did you know, the Atlas moth, the largest insect living in Hong Kong, in Cantonese (蛇頭蛾) translates as "snakehead butterfly", given its characteristic cobra-like eyespot & batesian mimicry. It looks very dissapointed.

A photo of the moth with spread wide. His forewings are orangish brown with a small dark, yellow bordered eyespot towards the front, ink stripes near his body, and a black stripe crossing down the sides. The hindwings are a bit more brown with the black stripe continuing. The eyespot is much larger black with yellow and then black in the center. There is some thought that these eyespots resemble the eyes of an owl which helps in deterring predation. A 2:1 magnification photo of the moth's eyespot, showing the individual scales. The white scales around the center of the eyespot are trident shaped, the brown scales around the outside, and the yellow scales in the bottom center are more hair-like

Many bivalves can see! Scallops have hundreds of eyes, which they can even use to resolve simple shapes, to help them navigate while swimming. Giant clams and some other cockles have them too. Juvenile oysters have an eyespot for navigating in the larval phase #clamFacts 🧪
