#FDB
you can tell fdb is the real deal because apple uses it and you never hear anything about it
I think a lot of people don't realize how old foundationdb is. they started dev in 2009, the same year that mongo was released

fdb was very well-designed but it's ancient tech. the fact that the rest of the industry hasn't even caught up to *that* is, genuinely, embarrassing

fdb and sqlite are the only morally righteous databases

fdb has a lot of practical problems that impede adoption but the design is incredibly clean. a modernized fdb with good stewardship would take over the world

To be fair, Apple never talks about anything, and their cloud services suck. (But I have heard good things about fdb)

specifically, the atomic (really mostly gps) clocks allow you to avoid coordination when assigning timestamps. databases that use a timestamping server (percolator, fdb) have to run every begin and commit through it to ensure operations are ordered properly

Fr. I feel you either need sqlite or fdb and there's basically nothing in between unless you are doing something particularly fucky and esoteric like vector db stuff or GIS in which case you probably need something that only loosely looks like a (no)SQL db.

once I finally succumb to ai psychosis the first thing I'm doing is rolling a new lang and implementing another fdb-like. implementing fdb-likes will slowly consume my entire personality

like unironically as someone who has produced a working clone (modulo perf) of ~95% of fdb it's not intractable or anything. it took me a while to get my head around the architecture but I didn't know anything about databases when I started

FoundationDB already collects transaction profiles. The annoying part is that it overwrites them, so debugging something that happened yesterday is an adventure.

We built fdbprof to keep that data in ClickHouse and make it explorable in Grafana.

what I really wanted was an ecosystem where the k/v layer and higher layers (e.g. relational) can be implemented and tested *together*, which is something fdb never achieved

that's why I started in elixir because I thought the perf tradeoff was worth it in an ousterhout's dichotomy sense

If I had more time, I'd really like to go back to FDB and see if I could get it there after everything I learned. That said, a cluster would need to achieve at least 3M+ writes per second to match the performance we got with our rocksdb cluster

Neardy background stuff from the FDB team. Just stumbled upon this gem a couple weeks ago.
Such a crazy engineering effort!

can someone sanity check this design for me: I need to rotate a wal, but this is an fdb-like and the last few seconds of writes always need to be buffered, so I can never checkpoint the entire wal

instead my idea is to keep two wal files and rotate between them

that's a lot of posts. not to beat a dead horse but did that really not fit in fdb? I could've sworn there was talk of clusters in the GB/s range, and that was before apple sold out to Big RocksDB

The Hawai‘i DOH Food and Drug Branch (FDB) is alerting residents to a recall issued by Vitality Works Inc., of its 365 Whole Foods Market Standardized + Full Spectrum Blend Ashwagandha Capsules 120 count because of potential contamination with Salmonella.

my guess is you could squeeze that but you couldn't 10x it again without sharding across clusters. fdb really needs a successor, there's so much that could be cleaned up. I made some decent improvements to the log system but elixir just isn't the right language, esp in 2026

Today we have a romp through database theory and how indices get implemented on top of FoundationDB so you can learn more about how the tools you use work. Enjoy!
