if you have the money to spare, the hakko FR301 is the gold standard, it's great. but the ZD pumps (915, 8915) are the best value if you don't desolder very often. don't use more heat than you need, and don't press the nozzle too hard on the PCB, that way you'll avoid burning/scratching it

What do you have for tools? I usually use my Hakko FR301 To desolder the 5 pins from modulator and the 4 ground pins

Though I’ll often use that to remove most of the solder then use desoldering braid to wick away the rest/clean

I find you need high temp, I use about 400C on those joints

After several years of heavy use (I have to imagine thousands of pulls) my trusty Hakko FR301 was showing signs of a dying heating element.

Was a little pricey but got a replacement here, and also went ahead and ordered a new sleeve, another nozzle and did some cleaning!

For SMD components I either use my hot tweezers if it’s something like a ceramic cap or resistor, or for stuff like ICs / chips just hot air station. Really situationally dependent

yeah that AV port is really a pain to get off. I cleared the holes best i could with FR301 but some of the pins connected to gnd would not clear, so used hot air to heat up and let teh connector drop off bottom of the board

Same. I have an FR301 and it plows through an xbox board like nothing. No way I would offer xbox recaps without that thing! would be a royal pain

also there are the SMD caps youll need to use hot air for!
