John Hudson’s excellent point about libraries: catalogs are useful, but librarians are essential. A catalog could not identify the books he needed for his project. Only librarian with deep knowledge of the collection could guide him.

One thing that makes @stanfordsilicon.bsky.social’s #FaceInterface a unique conference: despite hailing from many different disciplines (engineering, design, linguistics), almost everyone here knows by heart the difference between “character” & “glyph”.

Bridget Chase: feedback from an elder on a prototype keyboard that "there is no f in my language, but there is in Facebook". Switching keyboards back and forth was a huge hassle. But other people also had strong feelings about not having any characters outside their orthography. #FaceInterface

Anshuman Pandey: Verama allows some scripts to maintain coda consonant as a pure consonant. For Kulitan, shifting direction from horizontal to vertical enables the same, but it's an unusual strategy. Makes it much harder to encode the script. #FaceInterface

Bridget Chase: updated 5 existing typefaces to not only incorporate the new characters, but take into consideration the typographic preferences that communities have for their languages. Diacritic positioning is important and can be challenging. #FaceInterface

Marta Bernstein: In-person research, go in person if you can. A lot of older archives aren't digital. "Go to archives. It's fun." Understanding of 19c Italian has been key. Type specimens were working tools, not built to survive. #FaceInterface
