#Fanfold
If you're gonna put in dry ice fog, go the whole way and have a van de graaff ladder on the table and a giant computer with lights and reel-to-reel tape printing fanfold paper in the background.

Oh, I disavow any printer that doesn't use tractor-feed fanfold paper, like God intended.

Thinking about 384bit certs, stars and trees.

When Arthur C Clarke used a billion he meant a million million (10^12).
So a 44bit binary computer?
An IBM chain printer would need 875million sheets of fanfold paper to print the 9billion names.
Or ~100,000 trees.

When the cipher outgrows the page and builds its own architecture in the dark. Pushed Tri-X 1600 grain and the quiet tension of 1980s analog codebreaking.

The Permutation Matrix
In a dimly lit 1980s basement office, a cryptanalyst watches punched paper tape and fanfold printouts lift from the desk, their perforations projecting a self-assembling lattice of structured light in the air. Shot on Kodak Tri-X pushed to 1600 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens, the low-key black-and-white print shows heavy silver grain, thin grey shadows, and warm foxing along the worn borders.

I used to work for a Japanese based company, whose CEO was from Japan, and didn't speak a lick of English. We had a Telex, and his morning newspaper came in on it. It took me sometimes 2 hours to fanfold it for him to read. I was the switchboard operator. Lovely coworkers- terrible job.

It was making the wrong colors or shapes. He showed us a dot-matrix fanfold paper printout of the BASIC code. The punchline was that the operators of the factory didn't want to stop the program to patch the one line of code to do the right thing so they put a rubber band on a valve as a workaround.

I’m back to blogging!

Here’s a story that begins in 1994 with a Turbo Pascal code snippet and ends up involving cellular automata, DOSBox, Three.js, and a few doughnuts 😀

The Griffeath demons
A friend kept the fanfold printout of a program we wrote in Turbo Pascal in 1994 all these years. It turned out to be a cellular automaton, and now it runs in the browser.

I used to use a page of pregenerated rolls for Champions to speed up combat. I'd have a page of fanfold paper with just an endless list of 3d6 rolls and rolls in the amounts of the villains attacks, so I wouldn't have to spend time counting 20 dice twice every round.

Same: Pennsylvania wouldn’t even accept an application for college financial aid if I didn’t have a HS diploma. Eventually had to hand deliver my college transcripts to a dust covered office in a voctec school where they printed my GED on fanfold paper on a dot matrix printer.
