In April 2024, Pixels shipped a partial implementation of our January 2024 proposal for firmware-based reset attack protection. Fastboot mode now zeroes RAM before enabling USB. This successfully wiped out the After First Unlock state exploit capabilities of two commercial exploit tools.

symptoms: device randomly boots into fastboot mode for no apparent reason, but only when you're not trying to debug it

A regression causing fwupd to interfere with using fastboot with all Pixel devices including blocking installation part of the way through has been fixed by the same contributor who fixed the previous issue:

It hopefully won't regress again after this.

This is marked as a pixel3a, but it actually applies to a pixel 9
as well. We don't plan to be flashing pixel devices with fwupd
and this could cause problems with things like /usr/bin/fastboo...

If they reboot it into fastboot mode, they can try to exploit the fastboot mode firmware. Since April 2024, Pixels zero memory before enabling USB in fastboot mode based on a proposal by us in January 2024 to block that for AFU. GrapheneOS zeroes memory as it's freed and wipes it at boot time too.

It's possible to enable reserving the tag memory for MTE via `fastboot oem mte on`, boot a non-stock kernel ignoring arm64.nomte and use MTE. We're in the process of determining whether it's fully functional and the performance characteristics. It's likely disabled due to performance being ruined.

Fastboot mainly exists for the purpose of unlocking a device, installing new firmware/OS images, flashing a verified boot key and locking the device. Fastboot isn't an the update sideload protocol, isn't a safe way to do that and isn't used for updates by any reasonable device.

ooh okay i managed to get my phone into recovery mode from a reboot loop and now i have to choose from these options:
reboot system now
reboot to bootloader
enter fastboot
apply update from adb
apply update from sd card
wipe data/factory reset
mount/system
any suggestions haha

Some of these radios use the fastboot protocol to implement updating the firmware. It's a horrible way to do updates and is unsafe, especially since it's not being used with A/B slots. Fastboot is designed for performing an initial install, not updating devices, and especially not without A/B slots.

We proposed zeroing memory in firmware when rebooting to fastboot mode to wipe out the whole class of attacks. They implemented this by zeroing memory when booting fastboot mode. USB is only enabled by fastboot mode after zeroing the memory is completed, blocking these attacks.
