Little-known fact: The word "Fernandomania" first appeared in print atop Scott Ostler's column for the Los Angeles Times on April 27, 1981.
Scott Ostler, one of premier baseball scribes, incredibly creative mind, funniest columnist around, close friend. Never imagined he’d call it quits. Loved being teammate, sharing ideas, tagteaming on important stories, talking up our kids’ swimming endeavors. Best of luck, buddy.

Linsanity was the closest thing the NBA ever got to Fernandomania, except it lasted like three weeks instead of a season
Jeremy Lin retires: “Its been the honor of a lifetime to compete vs the fiercest competitors under the brightest lights…to challenge what the world thought was possible for someone who looks like me.…I’ll forever be the kid who felt fully alive everytime I touched a basketball”

The documentary is called “Fernandomania @ 40.” I highly recommend it. Here’s the part where Ortega is discussed. youtu.be/4dcvx9i-ahg?...

I know he falls short in terms of longevity and career totals, but I keep coming back to this thought about this year's Hall of Fame Contemporary Era ballot:

Fernando Valenzuela's story -- between his early dominance and the cultural impact of Fernandomania -- is worthy of a plaque in Cooperstown.

Here is the complete run of base Topps cards for Phil Ortega. Elliott and I became interested in Ortega because of a story in the “Fernandomania” documentary.

16000 days ago (April 22, 1981), Fernandomania is revving up. Valenzuela pitches his third shutout in four starts, strikes out 11 Astros, and drives in the only run of the game. Not much else you can ask of him.
