The last #fiberuaryChallenge theme "gratitude" is especially difficult today, but I am happy with my current project, the Eye Dazzler sweater. I blocked the top-down yoke on the needles and the stranding is tidy and the size is coming out as expected. Photos before and after.
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a top-down stranded colorwork yoke laid flat on a gray flannel sheet on top of a yellow ruler measuring the diameter at 13 inches. The yoke is hot pink with a pattern of zig zagging lines that shift from blue to purple. The corrugated rib neckline is standing up so that the ribbing is barely visible. Photo of the same pink and blue stranded colorwork yoke in the same position but after blocking. the diameter is now 14.25 inches and the corrugated ribbing is lying flat, the colorwork puckering is geon, and the stitches are more even.

#fiberuaryChallenge "looking forward": This weekend I'm looking forward to knitting with my first handspun yarn! ~170 yds of DK corriedale spun and plied on an Ashford 2.75 oz spindle that I now realize is almost comically large. Last photo shows my practice attempts.
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a brilliant turquoise skein of slightly fluffy 2-ply yarn held in my left hand with a kitchen floor and door in the background. The yarn is *mostly* consistent, with some thicker and thinner spots here and there, and some over- and under-twisted spots here and there. Photo of a large Ashford drop spindle with the same turquoise 2-ply yarn wound around it on a gray flannel sheet. This was just after I finished plying. Photo of a shoebox plying set up shown from the top. The shoebox has two takeout chopsticks suspended in the middle of the box, stuck through holes punched in the box's long sides. On each chopstick is a cardboard toilet paper tube with brilliant turquoise singles wound around it. Plying hasn't begun, but is ready to start. Photo of 4 mini skeins of undyed white and brown handspun wool yarn of (arguably) increasing quality. Each skein is labeled with a number 1 - 4 and the date it was spun and plied. From left to right: #1 2024-03-02 Thick and think with many thick lumps of underspun wool. #2 2024-03-02 - 2024-03-03 Better, but still some thick slubs. #3 2024-03-03 Spun too tightly, with too much twist. #4 2024-? (not visible in the tag) More consistent, somewhat thick and fluffy, but consistently so. Looks like a rustic worsted weight yarn and not a spindle malfunction.

#fiberuaryChallenge "where in the world": A favorite photo I took when I stopped to knit socks alongside the path to Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór, during a long ago trip to Ireland. Pattern is Maeva from @knitty.com, made with KnitPicks stroll. Finished the socks some months later.
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a younger me wearing sunglasses, dangly earrings, and a fox-colored tee over gray long sleeves. I'm bent over a green sock knitting project on the side of a dirt path that stretches off into the distance on a beautiful sunny day. Low stone walls stretch off to either side and a few small white houses are barely visible in the far distance before a rocky coast along blue water. Photo of a black project bag with the toes of green toe-up two-at-a-time magic loop socks. The project sits on my lap as I'm riding on the bus from Dublin to Cork, or perhaps Cork to Galway. Photo of the variegated green socks completed. My feet are stretched out in front of me with my toes curled up over a window ledge. The socks are k5 seed st 2 rib with a latice of traveling twisted stitches wrapping around the sides of the feet and coming to a point before the toes.

#fiberuaryChallenge "style": my style is best described as "I made this thing and it's teal or purple," but every once in a while I accidentally make something stylish, like this Marklee sweater. Yarn is MCN from Seattle Sky Dyeworks (now Wool for the People).
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Close up photo of a hand knit sweater worn by me. The sweater is sock weight yarn in pale aqua with bright aqua and gray variegation. The silhouette is drop shoulder with a mild scoop neck, a faux seam of slip stitches slanting forward to the hem from the underarm, and a split hem with a deep broken rib.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "sweater weather", this is the hand knit cardigan I wore today on my sunny & cold afternoon walk. Photo taken after the sun went away 😕 The pattern is Otra Yoke Cardigan by Skeindeer Knits, and the yarn is Harrisville flyWHEEL in nelson and birch bark.
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a pale gray cardigan with purple buttons and purple stranded colorwork at the yoke and above the ribbed cuffs. I'm wearing the cardigan over a navy blue tee and jeans and the cardigan takes up most of the photo.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "giving back", here are a few charity projects I’ve made:

* ZickZack scarf, KP Swish DK hollyberry & serrano

* Patternless hat, KP Brava worsted eggplant & fairy tale

🧶 #knitting #knitSky

Photo of a crochet ripple afghan in wide red and blue stripes separated by narrow white stripes. The afghan is folded in half lengthwise and hung over a towel rack. #FiberuaryChallenge Day 22: Giving Back. The textile piece of my work feels more like paying forward. Trying to teach people enough to be able to debug things themselves. Running spaces where they can meet other people who make things. Hoping some of it will remain part of their lives. #DHmakes
A busy day in the Textile Makerspace with lots of people doing different textile things.

#fiberuaryChallenge "sip & knit": Here's me knitting with a friend at my favorite tea cafe a few months ago - a vanilla sock for me and a Musselburgh hat for her.

For today's #fiberuaryChallenge theme "finished it", here's the shawl I just finished on Wednesday and wore today. Secession by Kristina Vilimaite in merino bellini yarn from Magliamania in Bern, Switzerland (2017 vacation). I'd never done beaded knitting before.
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of me holding a petrol green handknit shawl in front of me over my right arm. The shawl has a garter stitch section at the top with a larger section of 3p x 1k twisted rib with the twisted knit lines ending in leaves to make a fancy border. The bases of the twisted knit lines each have 3 turquoise beads on. Close up photo of the petrol green shawl artfully wrapped around my neck. The beads make a line around my neck suggesting a necklace and the leafy edges of the shawl are draped over my shoulders. Photo of the entire shawl laid flat on a white table to show the asymmetric crescent shape. The left side has a single leaf at the end of each twisted knit line. The right side ends in two rows of alternating leaves. An arc across the middle of the shawl has the base of each twisted knit line with 3 turquoise beads.

#FiberuaryChallenge Day 20: Finished it. Why we gotta do this today? I'm 3 days from finishing my dataviz weaving but not quite there. 😅 So I'm doing the opposite thing and starting my first crochet project in a long while, a blanket for the second-grader. #DHmakes

The #fiberuaryChallenge "color crush" theme is so easy for me. Turquoise, teal, aqua, blue-green - I love them all. Rambouillet + silk fiber; Joni tee, Juniper Moon Farm damask; Multnomah shawl, Tosh merino light; Fairy bouquet sweater, Neighborhood Fiber Co studio sock + loft
🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Close up photo of combed top fiber for spinning, in a tonal aqua and turquoise palette with some gray and darker blue mixed in. There's a lustrous sheen from the silk content. Close of photo of me wearing a cyan hand knit tee with cap sleeves. A rectangular lace panel makes a beautiful statement on the front, over a background of stockinette with purled stripes every ~1 inch. Photo of a variegated teal and hint of brown crescent shaped shawl displayed on the edge of a couch seat. The shawl has a garter stitch base with increases down a center garter spine and an old shale pattern making a wavy lace edging. Side on photo of me wearing a teal hand knit sweater with a shiny mohair halo. The right sleeve is in the front and center of the photo, featuring a twisted rib and wrapped stitches pattern that is meant to evoke butterflies (or fairies) flying down the sleeve.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "wear it Wednesday" and #showMeYourKnits "pinks," here's the sweater I wore today: Strokkur by Ysolda Teague. The yarn is New Lanark Wool & Textiles Aran in Heather, Natural, and Pebble, purchased when I was in Edinburgh a few years ago.

#FiberuaryChallenge Day 18: Wear it Wednesday. It's cloudy and gray again today, but this is as close to gray as my wardrobe will take me. Fox shirt and Unicode archive pants (with giant pockets), shawl from summer 2023 road trip. All made by me + jewelry from @peculiarityshop.bsky.social #DHmakes

#FiberuaryChallenge Day 17: Project bag. Let's be honest, all my project bags are full of shattered dreams. This is the bag for knitting a blanket for the second-grader. I can't count, the thing is a mess and getting frogged. I also failed at a Pride cardigan I loved recently. #DHmakes #DHtries

I missed a few days of #fiberuaryChallenge and I'm not going to try to catch up. I was having too much fun at Red Alder fiber arts retreat, where I took excellent classes - spindle spinning with Devin Hellman and Portuguese stranded knitting with Ana Campos - and met so many amazing fiber artists.

Today's #fiberuaryChallenge theme is "project bag contents" so here are the items from my notions bag that I used tonight: my best needle for weaving in ends, a needle threader, Portuguese knitting pins & necklace, and scissors I shamelessly took from my mother when I moved.

#FiberuaryChallenge Day 16: Matching. My mother was extremely anxious about clothes matching, to the point of it being a mental health issue. Making my own clothes has taught me that confidence matters more than matching as such. My style has been described as "power clashing" & I love it. #DHmakes
