I see LLMs lie to people about being able to read floodmaps and regulations on a regular basis.

The floodmaps being used in the Florida Keys are based on a 1929 conception of mean sea level...

I looked up how to submit data to www.floodinfo.ie/map/floodmaps/ and was amazed to see it requires you to use a Word document.

Weird question: if/when you're looking at places to live, either buy or rent, would you examine the geology and floodmaps?

3. Is your site safe in future climate? Knowing that all current floodmaps are wrong, consider overland flooding potential. Don't build in areas with flood potential. Don't build at the wildland-urban interface, where homes are more exposed to wildfires.

When we were looking at moving house recently, we checked out the SEPA long term flood maps and ruled out a few on that basis

There’s letter of map amendments and revisions. Revisions are when your property is located in the floodplain but is high enough to not be considered at risk of flooding. Amendments take engineers doing hydrology studies to officially change the federal floodmaps.

We looked at the floodmaps of Cardiff when considering where to buy. We ruled out whole swathes of the city as a result.

Thank you, yes. Also SEPA flood maps

Showing our garden floods once in 200 years. This has happened twice in 5 years :-) I mistakenly asked SEPA if they minded if I built a bridge over our stream, the reply was "DO NOT BUILD A BRIDGE IT MIGHT CAUSE FLOODING!!!"

FEMA said this about their own flood maps: ""They are not predictions of where it will flood, and they don't show where it has flooded before."

What do they show then because that is some specious gaslighting?
Dozens of Camp Mystic buildings removed from 100-year flood map by FEMA before expansion, records show
The Federal Emergency Management Agency included Camp Mystic in a "Special Flood Hazard Area" in its National Flood Insurance map for Kerr County, Texas, in 2011.

As I recall, we actually did when we bought the place we live now, though geology isn't much of an issue here. Floodmaps much more so with impending global warming-driven changes.

For rentals I don't think I ever have, but that might also be my age, or the General State of the World deteriorating.

Trenton is JUST at the tip of the Delaware River estuary which means it still gets fucked by tidal flooding. I bought a house a few miles upriver and I obsessed over floodmaps making sure the hurricanes/sea level rise wouldn't wipe me out.

Or shorter: if the ocean was 7m higher during the Eemian, how far into the Amazon basin did the Atlantic reach? Floodmaps suggests lots (in terms of how far inland the intrusion got) and not much (in terms of area inundated).

Exclusive: FEMA floodmaps underestimate flood risk by over 200K, new study shows
In Harris County, the number of properties facing 100-year-level flood risk may be more than twice as large as FEMA’s current maps suggest, according to a Texas A&M University study.

Lots of places don't have FEMA floodmaps, and for those that have them, they "don’t account for flooding caused strictly from increasingly heavy rainfall that overwhelms stormwater infrastructure in urban areas and inundates rural towns where there's nowhere for the water to go."
Michigan floods expose lack of information, preparation in many rural areas
Across Michigan, thousands were left without financial protection after record April rains fell on top of record March snowfall.

Texas (probably): Floodmaps are woke, we should ban them.
Developers: No, we need to know where the new coastline will be!
