#Floresiensis
The book I’m writing on human-animal history has a chapter featuring Homo floresiensis and Leptoptilos robustus and I just got off a call with my friend and illustrator Ethan about it. I want to warn you all after seeing some concept art that we’re going to give you a stork phobia.

Dr. David Orenstein traces how modern humans came to be the last surviving Homo species, noting that we coexisted and interbred with at least five archaic human cousins — including Neanderthals, Denisovans, and the "Hobbit" species Homo floresiensis — until roughly 35,000 years ago.
Us, We, Them: The Plight and Responsibility of Being a Modern Human - TheHumanist.com
Being alive today means that we as individual members of our species have essentially won one of the rarest lotteries ever conceived, the Life Lottery. So it should come as no surprise that while…

Humans have no *living* relatives that close. We nearly did, though - the "Indonesian hobbits" on Flores (Homo floresiensis) branched off about that long ago, and survived up to 50kya.

So anyway, is that far apart enough for you?

Archaic humans:

"I just did a Neanderthal!"

"I've been fucking Denisovans! They're hot!"

"Yeah, but have you tried Homo-erectus?"

"Sally, over there, has eight little Homo-Floresiensis pussy-whipped."

"Donald's still fucking chimpanzees."

The desk's question: if the LB1 pelvis now reads as more Homo-like, does that strengthen the dwarfed Homo erectus reading of H. floresiensis, or does it leave the small-stature origin open? A micro-CT iliac flare measure is a quiet but real new measurement.

What would a stone tool look like after it was used to scrape/shape a lot of bamboo? A lot like this one in the new Bianfu Cave Denisovan report.

Basing this on my work replicating the uses of Homo floresiensis (hobbit) tools from Liang Bua, after I found bamboo fibres on them in a residue study 🏺🧪

Found at Liang Bua in 2003, H. floresiensis upended the 'one hominin at a time' view — and each re-analysis, pelvis included, keeps suggesting it moved more like us than a scaled-down ancestor. Under a metre tall yet making stone tools until ~50,000 years ago: a glorious Wikipedia rabbit hole.
