Humming Flowerfly (Syrphus ribesii)

Have you ever walked along a path or paused in a sunlit glade and noticed flies hovering at about head height? It might be this species of hoverfly.

#FlowerFly in a morning glory flower today. I was very envious of its shade!
#inverts

A small yellow and black flower fly of some sort (I think it’s a hoverfly? But it was happy where it was) perches on the anthers of a ravishing white trumpet shaped flower of a morning glory/hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium), which is invasive here in B.C. However it is a very pleasing bloom especially when it is not your garden to weed haha! The little flower fly looks like it has never been so happy in its life, shaded from the midday sun and face buried in pollen.

A few different angles of a bare-eyed bee mimic fly, Mallota bautias, a lifer in my own #garden! #Syrphidae is one of my favorite taxa, I particularly like bumblebee mimics, so this was exciting!

#FlyDay #FlowerFly #Pollinator #Invertebrates #BugSky #HoverFly #Diptera #MacroPhotography

A bare-eyed bee-mimic fly visiting wafer ash flowers. The fly faces the viewer (though more interested in the flowers) and mimics a bumblebee, with black, shiny abdomen, thick black legs, and fuzzy yellow thorax, though the big black fly eyes and single pair of transparent wings give away that this is a fly, not a bee. (Bees have different eyes and two pairs of wings.) The fly's face is bent to the pale green flowers of the wafer ash. The tree's trifoliate green leaves frame the scene.

Lovely photo, and I love the flowerfly. Syrphids are one of my favorite insect groups.

She looked so fine, I just had to speak
I asked her name, but she turned away
As she walked, all that I could say was
Hmm, yeah, yeah, hmm, hmm, yeah, yeah
Hmm, yeah, yeah, all that I could say was"

And love is a tower where all of us can live"
