I #FoundThatLizard, can you?
A fellow hiker on his way to his car said he’d been there since 4 am and didn’t see anything. Herping really is just the luck of the draw.

Within the first 30 mins of this hike, I saw a sagebrush lizard. These small lizards are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day.

#FoundThatLizard! 😁

✨🦎✨
This week you’re searching for a western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis.

A fan favorite because they have very big personalities! In urban areas they’ll let you get pretty close, observing you as you observe them.

Can you #FindThatLizard

Over the last few years, Florida has seen a boom in green iguana (Iguana iguana) falling from trees.

Western fence lizards have beautiful blue patches on their bellies. The darker the blue, the more mature the male. When they do their famous push-ups, they’re communicating their dominance to potential rivals. This posturing often prevents physical fights, which could cause injury.

Ooo really good one! #FoundThatLizard
When I first started #FindThatLizard, it was a way to engage with people virtually because I lacked the resources and know-how to bring people together in person.

Tonight you’re searching for a sagebrush lizard.
Can you #FindThatLizard?!

Recently, I visited Calico Basin. I got there early, at 7 am. It was almost 90 degrees even that early, and I worried I wouldn’t see anything.

Lizards pant to cool themselves off when temperatures get too high!

All animals need ways to cool down, lizards included, because they can overheat. Humans sweat, birds bathe or swim, and pigs roll in mud. So it makes sense that lizards would have a cooling strategy.

Can you #FindThatLizard?!

It’s my birthday this Sunday so for this week’s challenge, I wanted to reflect on my love for lizards and why I wanted to share that love with all of you.

I wasn’t always obsessed with lizards. In fact for most of my life, I didn’t even give them a second thought.

Scientists aren’t exactly sure why they do this, but it is definitely an interesting phenomenon to observe.

Western fence lizards and other species are territorial. That’s why they do pushups. They’re showing off that blue color on their bellies and necks. The pattern of the push-up “dance” varies by species and slightly by population. Can you #FindThatLizard. LMK with #FoundThatLizard. Solution @10pm PST

This behavior is associated with their ovulation cycle and mounted females experience an increase in fecundity (their ability to produce offspring).

We should be recognizing the contributions of Black scientists, especially those in environmental fields, as we often go unnoticed, but keep joy at the forefront as this administration is hellbent on making us miserable.
