A leprous devil forces a sinner down into the jaws of hell on a bench end at Freckenham, Suffolk. 15th Century, but the sinners legs at least are a modern restoration, and perhaps more of it is, but that doesn't really matter. 1/3

3/3 15th Century silvered oak angels in the north aisle roof at Freckenham, one holding a crown of thorns. The wings probably came during George Street's 1860s restoration.

2/3 Also from Freckenham, a woman kneels at a prayerdesk to tell her beads. 15th Century, but again her head is entirely modern, and the join isn't terribly good. I think this may originally have been Pride from a seven deadly sins sequence.

Nice one! (Though Freckenham rather than Freckingham!)

Only evidence, Lee Brook, a winterbourne #chalkstream, is still a live river through Chippenham en route to join the River Kennett at Freckenham and thence the Lark, is a bit of Fool's Watercress & some river restoration structures. Even the sewage works isn't getting it flowing. #MyWalk #Rivers 1/2

I have to let them know if I have any connections to particular parishes in the area and some of these place names are extremely english.

I don't believe some of these places really exist.

Jockey, 19, found dead at home as police release statement on tragic incident
The racing community will unite in grief today as Newmarket, Wetherby and Uttoxeter racecourses observe moments of silence for apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who passed away suddenly at his Freckenham home on Thursday morning. The 19-year-old's death has sent shockwaves through the sport, with riders wearing black armbands throughout today's meetings as a mark of respect. ### Jakes, who had competed at Nottingham just hours before his death on Wednesday afternoon, was discovered at approximately 5.45am when emergency services were called to the property near Newmarket. The teenager was scheduled to partner two horses for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford on Thursday evening. ### TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say During his brief but impressive career spanning just three seasons, Jakes secured 59 victories from 519 rides since beginning his professional journey in 2023. The teenager formed a successful partnership with Classic-winning trainer George Boughey's Newmarket stable, where he became an integral team member. ### His maiden apprentice triumph came aboard Jane Chapple-Hyam's Suzi's Connoisseur at Lingfield in March 2023. Most recently, he celebrated victory on 18 October riding Boughey's Fouroneohfever at Catterick, which would prove to be his final winner. ### LATEST DEVELOPMENTS * Paul Scholes: More details on Man Utd hero emerge after split from wife following 26 years of marriage * Inside Phil Foden's suffering with Man City and England star's family targeted by nasty trolls online * Trent Alexander-Arnold sets record straight on Spanish lessons controversy as Liverpool return creeps closer ### The young rider also developed strong working relationships with Scottish trainer Linda Perratt and Newmarket-based Alice Haynes throughout his career. Boughey's stable expressed their devastation, stating: "He was not only a hugely talented young rider with so much to look forward to, but an incredibly kind, popular and hard-working young man. We will miss him immensely." Scottish trainer Linda Perratt, who enjoyed 17 victories with the rider she affectionately called "TomTom", remembered watching him mature from "a shy, quiet boy to a confident, fun-loving man". British Horseracing Authority's acting chief executive Brant Dunshea described Jakes as "a talented young rider with the world at his feet", noting the widespread grief throughout Newmarket's racing community. ### Fellow jockey Paul Mulrennan, who competed alongside Jakes on Wednesday, described the atmosphere in weighing rooms as "very sombre", remembering him as "always cheerful and polite". Suffolk Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious, with a spokesperson stating that officers were alerted by ambulance crews at 5.45am on Thursday to reports of a sudden death in Freckenham. In a statement, Suffolk Police said yesterday: “Police were called by the ambulance service at 5.45am this morning to reports of the sudden death of a man in Freckenham. ### “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will now be prepared for the coroner." A file will be prepared for the coroner's investigation. ### Racing's support services have mobilised to assist those affected, with helplines available through the Injured Jockeys' Fund (07780 008877), Racing Welfare (0800 6300443) and Samaritans (116 123). Thursday evening saw immediate tributes at Chelmsford and Southwell racecourses, where minute's silences were observed before racing commenced. Jakes came from a racing family, following his father Jeremy into the sport. ### **Our Standards:The GB News Editorial Charter **

A few highlights from today's sunny church crawl on the Suffolk/Cambs border: the wonky rood cross at Worlington; lion's-head bosses on the rood screen at Chippenham; the angel roof at Isleham; the setting of St Andrew's above the River Kennett at Freckenham

In the Kennett-Lee Brook downstream of Freckenham plenty of splendid minnows and several species of Caddis Fly larvae.

In case you can't spot stone loach above, here's a portrait. Also some large Gudgeon & a tiny Jack Pike.

Returning down Lee Brook past Lee Farm, suddenly came across a pillow case full of jewellery stuck against a fallen tree across the current! Lugged it home in case anyone wants to claim? Any recent thefts in #Freckenham #Isleham? Mute Swan outriders led way on the last leg. 7/7

Upstream of Lee Farm, Lee Brook full of Crowfoot, Willow Moss (Fontinalis antipyretica)?, Lesser Water-parsnip (Berula erecta) & other water plants as a #Chalkstream should be. Why not downstream also?

Suddenly just upstream of this structure at Lee Farm, Lee Brook became a beautiful #chalkstream again with pools of Dace. What could be causing the dead zone for the mile downstream? @theriverstrust IsMyRiverFitToPlay app lists no sewage outflow here

Apart from some swarms of fish fry at the confluence of the Lee Brook with the #RiverLark, many of which were diseased, including these Roach, for the first mile, the only fish I saw were diseased or dead, such as this Perch & these Three-spined Sticklebacks.

On the bed of the River Kennett upstream of Freckenham, the bowl of a 19th Century #claypipe, & stem of another.
Also #willowpattern ceramics with my 1st River Limpets (Ancylus fluviatilis).

A treat, as ever to see Bullhead in Lee Brook, upstream of Beck Bridge, Freckenham. Also pregnant looking Three-spined Stickleback. As in previous swims further downstream: large earthworm - could it be Sparganophilus tamesis?; & dead Stickleback - why? #freshwaterfishes

Delighted to find a Water Vole latrine as I was clambering over a fallen tree in Lee Brook, where the Signal Crayfish are more like lobsters >15 cm. Lots of Caddis Fly larvae of various species & abundant Chalk-stream Water Crowfoot.

Today I fell in love with Bullheads. In Lee Brook btw Beck Bridge & Freckenham it's Bullhead City they're so abundant. Saw mainly little ones but also the big bruiser lower left. Love how varied their patterning is. But always that natty white trim to the dorsal fin. #MySwim 1/5

Upstream of Freckenham, Lee Brook becomes the River Kennett, the boundary btw #Suffolk & #Cambs, a vibrant chalk stream of clear rushing water with abundant Chalk-stream Water Crowfoot. Surely it would be suitable for brown trout - though I saw no sign?
