That's correct but it's also worth noting that all of the idTech engines up through gen 4 (doom 3 engine) do have official GPL source releases and accompanying source ports. I don't think any of the games besides Doom have "freedoom" style noncommercial base data.

Play clown cabin. It's an Hdest mod that requires Ugly as Sin and Freedoom, but past that i think it's a pretty cool map collection so far >;3

as someone whose big hobby project is a *technically* maximally compatible Freedoom fork, but who'll never have the same reach bc i'm specifically avoiding anything resemblng the canon Doom mythos, i agree

it is weirdly easier to find a ready-to-use freedoom IWAD on the internet (or an illegal commercial IWAD) than it is to find a copy of Doom Shareware that you don't have to install through dosbox.
