Fukishima at 15: The fallout continues
Officials claim Japan's worst-ever nuclear disaster is dealt with. Try telling that to the people.

I assume all ocean food is radioactive following the Fukishima Nuclear meltdown disaster.

Both of these disasters are bad, don't get me wrong. Fukishima however was way over blown in the media. When considering "just" the marine disasters, the radionuclides from Fukishima were quickly diluted and dispersed. While Piney Point did more long-term localized injury to the immediate ecology.

Shin Godzilla: Godzilla is an allegory Fukishima meltdown and the government's inability to properly react to disaster

Iizaka, Fukishima- Kasamatsu Shiro (1898-1991).

40 year olds were 2 when Chernobyl happened and 27 when Fukishima melted down, so I would like to see evidence they see no real danger.

If you like the focus on bureaucracy in Chernobyl then check out The Days on Netflix. It's about the Fukishima disaster. Not as good as Chernobyl but nothing is. This is also why I think Shin Godzilla is the best recent Godzilla movie. It is a commentary on Fukishima.

I always feel like it needs to be pointed out that Fukishima was scheduled to be shut down before an unexpectedly massive earthquake and tsunami hit it. Nothing that happened during the disaster was 'average' in any way and shouldn't be indicative of future nuclear plants failing.

That sounds awesome. Is it like near fukishima or something? (Joking) I just imagine Japan being like Toronto prices for some reason.

Takes too long to build, when nuclear accidents happen it makes surrounding lands unsafe to live in and unsafe to grow vegetables etc. refer Chernobyl and Fukishima
May 19, 2026 at 2:49 AM
That's better than a Chernobyl style blackout. Or Fukishima. I'll take a Iberian Peninsula blackout every time given the choice.

I guess we will find out of the DOGE NOAA cuts have impacted the Alaska Tsunami Warning System after this 8.7 earthquake off the Russian coast. Of note, the Fukishima earthquake was only a 7.4 and caused SIGNIFICANT damage to Japan.

I think people are misunderstanding the reaction to the fukishima water in ocean reaction.

By focusing on whether or not it's safe you're ignoring people's very visceral reaction to the growing recognition that we're treating the ocean as our dumping ground.

Thank you for joining this conversation. Japan waited only 10 years to release Fukishima radioactive water into the ocean. Now shrimp is radioactive, and they sold radioactive green tea the whole time.
#Shame Japan.

remember when fukishima was happening and all the American videogame weebs were like "is this gunna affect Pokemon coming out"?

man set this place on fire.
May 20, 2026 at 6:56 PM
I try to explain to these dweebs that every port on Earth, 70% of the population, the vast majority of nuclear plants, chemical plants, oil refineries, etc... all reside within 250ft of sea-level. Think Fukishima was bad? Multiply that by 10,000 and make it permanent.

Both my parents too. Both get steam out the ears when people minimize Y2K as a hoax. There was a lot of hoaxing around it, just as there was around Fukishima and Antifa and any goddamn shit that's in the headlines. But both of them did a lot of work to minimize the actual problems.
