This silk tassel bush, Garrya elliptica, festooned with silvery catkins, makes quite an arresting sight.

Going all whimsical with today’s plant, Garrya elliptica, or the more rememberable silk tassel bush. ♥️

The garrya elliptica is also full of catkins.

My first #SixOnSaturday of 2026 definitely has a wintery feel, but there’s still some colour in the gardens.

I have an Algerian Iris, a crisp down, frozen waterfall, Snowdrops in the Snow, water droplets on Euphorbia and Garrya flowers.

There have been a really interesting selection of plants this week for my #SixOnSaturday

There’s a Garrya, two different kinds of Hellebores, Winter Sweet, Butcher’s
Broom and Snow Drops.

All out and flowering in early January.

Here's a neat shrub for winter blooms: Coast Silktassel (or garrya elliptica). Check out those long catkins! This evergreen shrub always makes me smile in January.

Some people think Garrya elliptica dismal, but a large bush is an imposing sight if you have the patience to wait for it. #gardening

Garrya elliptica is not so often seen, though it has been known in this country since 1818. #gardening pacifichorticulture.org/articles/coa...

apparently we’re not getting a fun January ice storm but these Garryas seem to be trying to make up for it

Planting like squirrels + one year = a forest of native roses, thorns, and wildflowers nursing young shrubs and trees.

And someone's nesting in there... will keep an eye out to see who will be laying claim to all those wildflower seeds!

Our Garrya ellipticas are growing like crazy. We have 4 established plants on the property now, 2 males (common), and 2 females (rare). The males are outgrowing the females and putting out so much pollen that it's getting hard to breathe! Come on guys. A gal can stand only so much pollination. 🌎🌿😂

Garrya does require patience for it dislikes being moved and therefore must be planted small; also you must insist upon getting a male plant or there will not be any catkins. #gardening

A 7-spot ladybird sheltering on the hairy underside of a leaf of Garrya elliptica, a Silk Tassel Tree where it has possibly overwintered; the leaves have wavy edges and are quite 'leathery' so probably offer additional protection 🐞🍃
