Those pressures include diseconomy of scale (minimum cost of providing a service, regardless of how many people it serves), sustainability of professional roles with onerous on-call, and sub specialisation in health services instead of generalism

When Bill Bryson ludicrously asserted in Mother Tongue that there were no swearwords in Finnish, my vague enjoyment of his genial generalism flapped sadly away, never to return.

There’s a certain extent of generalism beyond which I just don’t trust pundit types. If you think you can opine with authority on everything, you are not receiving the kind of feedback inhibition that prevents most people from making this sort of wrong turn.

Statecraft also requires generalism, but it is a differently structured sort of generalism.

In statecraft the goals must be broad, and the tactics narrow. It’s in fact a direct inversion of the way an operator’s generalism manifests.

Increased host diversity limits bacterial generalism but may promote microbe-microbe interactions
Abstract. Host-associated bacteria vary in the number of host species they occupy. By colonizing many host species, host generalists can have disproportion

Highly generalised feeding by insect herbivores is often seen as a paradox. One possibility is that generalist species are really just made up of lots of hidden specialists. In this case generalism goes all the way down. 🧪🌏
Anything you can eat, I can eat better: Evidence of generalism from species to individual level in an insect herbivore
Most insect herbivores specialize on a few host plants; however, there are a minority of highly generalized species capable of feeding on hundreds of hosts. Generalism could emerge as a property of t...

Some of these LinkedIn profiles are getting a little too self congratulatory in the word soup they use, lol: “visionary” “world renowned expert” (less than 10 years experience) “leader in the field of generalism” (what does that even mean)?

Or maybe I’m just a hater lol.

If it has not been said already (what has not?), being good at generalism is an expertise.
Going to add an (admittedly self-serving) meta-observation here.

We tend to think of expertise as the domain of specialists.

But sometimes generalists are as well or better positioned to offer the kind of synthesis that helps experts and non-experts alike fully make sense of a situation.

This dynamic is made worse by the curse of toxic generalism applying to AI itself.

Because being an expert isn't the only defense against this kind of grift. Someone with no knowledge at all has the benefit of a healthy skepticism, and will be thinking about goals rather than methods.

Oh dear, I seem to have upset someone again. All because I dared to use the experience of having been through a central government redundancy round (and several in the private sector) to push back against a lazy generalism.

Modern political debate...

Particularism is a form of realism. The disagreement concerns whether ethics is a matter of applying general principles to particular circumstances (generalism) or not (particularism)

It's a generalism. An if you think righties give one flying toss about people in need then you are as guilty of anti-intellectualism as they are.

the least surprising thing here is that "mass deportation" generality descended into deporting-lots-of-specific-people-without-just-cause-or-due-process. large-scale generalism tends to fail in basically every context, and when it's plainly a human rights issue, it has catastrophic consequences.
