#Geocoder

BTW, the company that hosts these color Sanborn maps (including a geocoder to find the right map amongst the thousands of pages) is a paid service that the Chicago Public Library hooks us up with

"CA" != "CA " to the geocoder.

The @MapTiler geocoder (github.com/maptiler/...) is one of the most exciting projects not enough people know about - only 48 GitHub stars!

The geocoder includes a ton of great features:

One of many use-cases for the new @MapTiler geocoder support in #rstats mapgl:

Makes it easy to explore / teach about the odd shapes of Texas cities!

The Census geocoder API is free, and that allows you to not only validate addresses but match them to latitude and longitude:

There are a lot of options out there for geocoding.

I'm particularly fond of the interface I wrote to the Mapbox geocoder in the R {mapboxapi} package. It includes:

🌎 Forward and reverse geocoding;
🌎 Batch geocoding with 100k free queries / month;
🌎 A Shiny input with autocomplete for your apps!

I haven't used the #qgis Locator bar much so far (except to access the Nominatim Geocoder every once in a while). While dabbling with UI ideas, I ended up throwing it into the upper right corner where - I think - it stands out a bit more than in the bottom […]

The new `mapboxgl_view()` and `maplibre_view()` functions in #rstats's mapgl package return full-fledged map objects, so you can add features to your maps while saving time.

Example: spin up a choropleth with a geocoder to help you explore the results with hardly any code.

I've written a blog post about using @gbif.org to geocode localities (for some reason biodiversity people call this "georeferencing" 🤷‍♂️). Post is iphylo.blogspot.com/2026/02/gbif... (DOI coming soon once @rogue-scholar.wisskomm.social.ap.brid.gy picks it up). Tool at rdmpage.github.io/gbif-geocoder/

Darn it all to heck! My Pelias Geocoder is matching all my addresses to their city centers. I guess that didn't install correctly.

The fastest way to try out the MapTiler geocoder is in MapLibre via the {mapgl} #rstats package. Set your MapTiler API key, then here's all you need to start:

library(mapgl)
maplibre() |> add_geocoder_control(provider = "maptiler")

walker-data.com/mapg...
Add a geocoder control to a map — add_geocoder_control
This function adds a Geocoder search bar to a Mapbox GL or MapLibre GL map. By default, a marker will be added at the selected location and the map will fly to that location. The results of the geocode are accessible in a Shiny session at input$MAPID_geocoder$result, where MAPID is the name of your map.

Doing a happy dance because my Pelias geocoder for California doesn't put everything in Texas anymore!

We're super excited to have Geocodio returning as a sponsor this year! Geocodio: the delightfully boring geocoder. They've spent the last decade+ quietly processing billions of locations, wrangling 300+ million addresses, and building the geocoding service you always wanted. buff.ly/iJPcXRK

Day 2 of building a Pelias geocoder on my windows machine. (I started on Wednesday but yesterday I didn't really have time to work on it.) I'm taking notes on how I did it this time & plan to post it on my poor neglected blog so it won't take you 2 days (and counting). #gischat

Nice applied-data workshop. For address lists, the most reusable output is often not just points on a map but a table with geocoder used, match score, match type and review flags.
