Categorical nativeness is an epistemic shortcut. Effective environmental policy measures physical functional impact rather than geographic origin.

you just get the results in a few hours anyway and geographic and voter-file analysis is better at figuring out what the “crosstabs” of an election were

I like to use the analogy of the EU.

The EU has about 450 million people in it spread across 27 countries.

The US has 350 million people spread across 50 states and multiple territories.

Their geographic foot print is roughly similar, as is their economic footprint.

the racial breakdown here also points to the NPAs skewing to disaffected younger voters of color rather than Gen X white transplants, and so does the geographic breakdown:
1) and 2) are majority-Latino Clinton-Biden-Trump counties. 3) and 4) are giant blue counties. 5) is a big left-trending suburb
Geographically, the NPAs are most common in:
1) Miami-Dade
2) Osceola
3) Broward
4) Orange
5) Seminole

Yale alums put an endangered snake - and its ecosystem - in the spotlight
A recent photo spread in National Geographic Magazine documented efforts to protect the jade palm pit viper, an endangered venomous snake that inhabits the cloud forests of eastern Guatemala and western Honduras. The vipers — their scales an otherworldly emerald green with black and turquoise accents — pop off the magazine’s glossy pages, as does the lush beauty of the cloud forests, which are severely threatened by encroaching coffee plantations. The photographer, Jack Devlin ’22, studied visual storytelling at Yale. In shooting the spread, he twice visited a mountaintop nature preserve in Honduras managed by HonduHerp, a nonprofit organization founded by his friend and Yale classmate Tasman Ezra ’22. “It is the most beautiful forest I’ve seen,” Devlin said. “Every inch is covered by something green.” Devlin and Ezra met while students in “Plant Diversity and Systematics,” a course taught by Erika Edwards, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology that they took during the fall of their senior year. During a fieldtrip to Horse Island, a research and teaching site in Long Island Sound managed by Yale Peabody Museum, the two discovered that they shared an enthusiasm for photography. More specifically, they found they had a mutual interest in photographing...

Is air conditioning making me sick? The “air con cold” myth and the real risks
It is one of the most common complaints of modern life, heard from Manila to Marrakesh to Miami: "the air conditioning made me sick." People walk out of an ice-cold office with a stuffy nose and a sore throat, or spend a weekend in a hotel and come home with flu-like misery, and blame the machine. The verdict here splits cleanly in two, and the split is almost perfectly geographic: the sickness itself is not the air conditioner's fault, but some of the feelings that get blamed on it are real, and one genuine danger hides in exactly the place people least expect.
