This incredible oak ship’s figurehead is Germanic. Dating to the early C5th AD, you can just imagine these looming out of the sea mists as the first Germanic warriors, who went on to become the Anglo-Saxons, arrived on English shores after the Romans departed. Amazing find.

The Germanic Languages get their words for “eight” from Old High German ‘ahto’ and their words for “night” from Germanic ‘naht.’

‘Ahto’ and ‘naht’ both have that ‘-aht-’ in common, but this is also a coincidence.

I always find the survival of glass from antiquity to be amazing, but sometimes you come across quite extraordinary pieces.

This Romano-Germanic glass item is moulded into the form of a little fish or whale and it’s delightful.

Sometimes, borrowing a word can save it from extinction.

French ‘orgueil’ (pride) was borrowed from Germanic *uʀgōlī, which went extinct in all Germanic languages.

*Haifstiz (vehemence) didn’t survive in West Germanic, but French gave us its borrowing ‘haste’.

Zoom in to learn all about them:

GERMANIC CHIEFTAIN: So you’re saying keep it up and I’m guaranteed a warrior’s death?

MISSIONARY: …You know what? Sure.
