sadly they've forced gen-ai tech into a few spellcheck and grammarcheck tools sadly (and it's worse than the originals)
That said, I have a similar pet peeve - all these companies/ai-bros trying to conflate predecessor tech with gen-ai. Gen-ai isn't making scientific breakthroughs or 90s game logic

just put the finishing edits on my #novella now its just the grammarcheck and i can begin #audiobook production! a PDF release for #kindle will sadly be held up for a bit because im still waiting on art.

So it ends up with gen-ai actively making the mechanical aspects harder, while simultaneously producing LaCroix Vanilla writing for lazy people.

Autocorrect, grammarcheck and Clippy are algorithms that generate suggestions based off information you input. ChatGPT scrubs the writing of anyone and everyone with no crediting, and students try to pass off the result as their own work with minimal input. That's why ones okay and the other is not.

I specifically use an ancient copy of Windows Office to avoid AI crap, but they're apparently applying their "new" spell- and grammarcheck to that version (Win10 issue? Online dictionary?). It keeps telling me to change "whose" and "its" to "who's" and "it's" even when that's fucking wrong.

I use grammarcheck DOT net, which does a decent job? But I resent having to use another website to check grammar when google docs' busted system is in front of me.

Assisting, is fine, just like spellcheck and grammarcheck were always fine. As long as they don’t distort or alter images. I keep having to force my cameras and photo library not to alter anything without my permission.
They keep trying to “fix” things because Depth perception confuses them :)

Grammar and spelling corrections and recommendations have gotten actively worse since companies handed off curation of spellcheck and grammarcheck libraries to LLMs.
There's always been a bit of an issue with those programs not knowing English beyond a fifth grade level, but it's gotten worse.

After a dissertation with 7-8 languages in it, I don't even use spellcheck. "Grammarcheck" went down the wind decades ago since it can't analyze a complex sentence. Get yr little squiggles off my page.
