I worked on a few fairly prominent efforts in open source (Istio, OpenAPI), but I think of all of them, it’s gRPC that I think has the coolest story. Pull up a chair and set for a spell (any inaccuracies in what follows are 100% my fault for having a bad memory!).

I'm using grpc and protobuf for the first time wish me luck
We've been working on a HTTP/gRPC client because I've gotten annoyed by various other postman-like clients, and Perry got annoyed by subpar gRPC clients.
There's still plenty of work to do, but the basics are there for our own use cases.

Anyway, I love the story of gRPC. No commercial product, no big marketing push. Just a really useful open source technology that made communication easier, and a huge success.

Plus, more people were writing in Go and there was good tooling for gRPC in Go. And despite the fact that Google wasn’t really *pushing* gRPC, we just needed it to be out there…gRPC took off like wildfire.
