And I find heating fuel economics very confusing but it doesn't seem great that we have a northeastern area that to the best of my understanding is heavily reliant on oil for heat, and meanwhile we're antagonizing both Canada (major heating fuel exporter to us) & Iran (controls the oil choke point)

Trump's whole red dye diesel thing means that diesel that would otherwise end up heating people's homes this winter, will now be used to drive trucks.
The supply of diesel that is used for heating, and keeping people from freezing to death, will be diverted toward transportation.

When you look at the price of diesel spiking, remember that heating oil *is* diesel.
Fun fact: heating oil is diesel, but not taxed as much. In the US red dye is added to heating oil, green to diesel. Vice versa in the UK.
People caught using heating oil in their vehicles can get them impounded, pay huge fees, or even be imprisoned.
