#HFES
Hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) are a class of organic solvents. As non-ozone-depleting chemicals, they were developed originally as a replacement for CFCs, HFCs, HCFCs, and PFCs. They are typically colorless, odorless, tasteless, low toxicity, low viscosity, and liquid at room temperature.

That would be Gloria L. Grace? Nice.
Are you sure about origins of Human Engineer? The term has been around since 1940s

🎉 Badgers Shine at HFES ASPIRE 2025! 🎉
The UW–Madison Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering made an incredible showing at the 2025 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) ASPIRE event. Our department’s excellence in human factors and ergonomics were on full display!

We used precision functional mapping (pre-surgical fMRI) to define large-scale brain networks in 11 individuals who then had intracranial electrodes implanted for seizure monitoring (sEEG and ECoG), and underwent single-pulse (SPES) and high-frequency electrical stimulation (HFES).

Thrilled to be attending the #HFES Healthcare Symposium 2025! If you're attending in Toronto, please say hi!

Here are all the instances of clear sensorimotor effects:

Again, most of the time, HFES within 10 mm of the SMOT network led to sensorimotor effects.
August 5, 2025 at 3:46 PM
The two types of maps overlapped a lot, but sites where HFES led to network-related behavioral effects were significantly closer to the individualized maps than the group-defined maps:

Sorry, @bttyeo.bsky.social :)

I'd expect to see it in human factors venues (Human Factors, Accident Analysis and Prevention; conference proceedings at CHI, HFES, TRB)

Across all stim sites and networks, HFES led to a behavioral effect related to a given Network N (e.g., language effects for LANG, Sensorimotor effects for SMOT) more when applied close (e.g., < 5 mm) to that network.

That was my HFES talk in 2022

A lot of the time, No Effects happened. This could be because few behaviors are actually tested during HFES (e.g., reading, counting, arm movements).

The maps could improve future clinical mapping, by showing which networks are present at the stim site, and indicating behaviors to test ⚡
August 5, 2025 at 3:47 PM
Note that we had few instances of 1 mA stimulation, so the SPES plot on the left here needs validating in larger samples. But it’s reassuring that a similar effect is seen in the HFES plot on the right.

More dominance at stim site = more specificity of effects

What about behavioral effects?

We saw a similar thing with the high-frequency stim (HFES), which is used for functional mapping (i.e., to evoke/disrupt behaviors such as arm movements, speech arrest) in the clinic.

Here are 4 cases, showing all stim sites that led to clear language effects:

HFEs tend to have higher molecular weights (and while TTE is far from the heaviest HFE, it’s still much heavier than HFCs), which means they don’t last long in the atmosphere before they sink down and get absorbed into the earth.

There is a short series from Yle (Finland) subbed and partially in English called The Norden highlighting this and other subjects. I recommend the whole thing but here's the prison episode (also covers Sweden and Norway): www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfEs...

Oh my. I’m reminded of the downtown Marriott in Atlanta, which is a ~50 story tower… with slightly low (by modern standards) railings.

Oh, and glass elevators.

Wasn’t my favourite for HFES.

I always felt that HFEs, or human factors engineers, are a underutilized role in game development because making features that are intuitive to grasp separates good design from great design.

I’m reminded of HFES, where I got adopted by one of the major figures of the field, who’d hold court over cider at lunch at an Irish pub near the venue.
