Aug. Gas Emissions Update- After purchasing a 3-season HVAC Heat Pump & Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) we've had 5 months with <=0.1 MCF/month gas use. In fact, we shut off our gas seasonally 4 months ago so gas use dropped to 0.0 MCF/mo. That's cut our annual gas spending by $200 so far. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🌊🔋

I'm talking about this here because while I mentioned it in my renewable energy video, I wasn't thinking enough about the mechanics of that argument.

If you’ve been hesitant about switching to a HPWH due to noise concerns, here’s a datum: 52 dBA at about 2’ from the running compressor. This is a Rheem Proterra 120V unit. Sound is nearly imperceptible when on the other side of this interior wall, and totally imperceptible elsewhere in the house.

-Every utility, esp. summer peakers, (and their state legislatures and PUC's) needs to get serious about getting anyone with a resistance electric water heater into an HPWH
-More Cool Roof Incentives/Regs (including radiant barriers)

Just an anecdote but because of the IRA tax credits plus Massachusetts (Mass Save) incentives I electrified my house completely with mini splits, induction stove, EV, HPWH. All used to be nat gas.

Again, the heat pump water heater incentives in the IRA, plus the savings versus a standard electric, propane, or fuel oil water heater make an HPWH an incredible deal (still good to upgrade vs gas but operational savings are small).

I reasoned that should decrease our summer HVAC cooling load due to the indirect cooling provided by the HPWH. With two months of data, I now have evidence that is happening. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🌊

Consider how many people, the 1st hour rating & the recharge rate. A 240V HPWH has a faster recharge rates than a 120V one. Our 240V, 50gal HPWH has a 1st hour rating of 65 gal & recharge rate of 21 gph. That's >4 15 gal showers in ~1 hr. There's just 2 of us so that should be more than plenty. 🧪🔌💡
