If you’ve been hesitant about switching to a HPWH due to noise concerns, here’s a datum: 52 dBA at about 2’ from the running compressor. This is a Rheem Proterra 120V unit. Sound is nearly imperceptible when on the other side of this interior wall, and totally imperceptible elsewhere in the house.

House is a hybrid where the heat pump carries everything until 20F where the furnace takes over.

Our house has both. With the recirc pump on it made the water heater run 24/7. So I put a smart plug on the recirc pump and a motion detector in the primary bathroom that turns the pump on for 5 mins. Solved the problem and would probably be better even without a HPWH.

I'm talking about this here because while I mentioned it in my renewable energy video, I wasn't thinking enough about the mechanics of that argument.

The cost to heat your water from inside your Arizonia garage with an HPWH should be minimal so would make a good investment just as soon as you've saved up for a modern water heater to replace your 20th century technology.

I'm a MEP engineer that does hvac for town homes and that vent above the closet is probably not needed anymore and fine to use for the hpwh. It was probably for the old gas water heater. Furnaces usually have a combustion air/flu concentric vent that pulls air from outside

just fab a drip pan just above the HPWH duct outlet (cake pan or similar, pref aluminum). Use foil HVAC tape to seal to the boot. Any condensation that accumulates should evaporate.

Thank you for making this! I've been curious about 120v HPWH for a while now, currently trying to move entirely off of gas after switching to mini-splits a few years back. This addresses a lot of my questions about it and when I get a job again I'm probably gonna make the switch.

A family member attempted to switch to a HPWH from traditional electric. Located in a garage in a mild climate. The plumbers said the were not licensed to work with HVAC 🤦

We’ve had a 120v HPWH for three years now. Highly endorse/recommend. The high temperature mixing valve units also add capacity if needed.

I think that in the future things like this might be an option. I have a small water heater closet as well. The install would be pretty involved though.
Some companies are even using one heat pump to provide HVAC and domestic hot water. That's going to work better for new homes though.

I installed a cold climate HP this year and have a propane fireplace for backup.
