#HQ2X
MiSTer FPGA devs: "Our goal is to be as accurate as possible to the original console hardware we're emulating."

Also MiSTer devs: "The GBA core has a scanline option and HQ2x."

cover yourself in HQ2X

I like the idea of Super ZSNES but I dislike the direction of some of the stuff like, sorry I don't really believe that Zelda thing is truly handdrawn it really gives me HQ2X vibes

Interesting. HQ2x and 3x are also options for ScummVM. They look pretty similar, but text seems to be more legible with PM.

i ran out of post space but i love that not only were there proper debugging emulators not made by nintendo, but that they came out side-by-side with the original hardware and helped with actual game development, shoutouts to halfbrick having to resist the urge to view all their sprites with hq2x

Deffo use scanlines. I would go with no filtering at all, since scanline filters already help with rounding off the image. But you could additionally go with bilinear if you prefer a softer look.
Stay far away from HQ2X, SAL or whatever they’re called.

A lot of older games' artwork and effects were intentionally crafted to take advantage of the "impure" nuances and characteristics of the screens of the time. (Ex: translucency effect in Sonic 2's waterfalls) Perfect square pixels ARE a distortion, just as bilinear/hq2x/crt/etc all are. (more)

the default Pixel camera app is so fuckin bad dude. this is some hq2x-ass rescaling
September 2, 2025 at 7:08 AM
Os posts que eu vi por aí mencionam xBR ou HQ2x
September 24, 2024 at 7:06 PM
because they've been included with the bigger mainstream emulators for 25+ years, basically. zsnes had hq2x in its first windows version release iirc

Pixel scalers have also been included. I know most people prefer the original pixels, and I totally understand that, but the options are there for those who like their graphics interpolated. 🙂 HQ2X, the regular xBR and xBRZ (the best pixel scaling algorithm to my experience).

nah fuck this hq2x-ass bullshit
June 5, 2025 at 4:22 AM
This is like saying hq2x is good. Lord, heavens no. Just use nearest if you want the best estimation of a pixel. Pixel art is INTENDED to be small and crunchy. I'd rather go the opposite direction and get a CRT filter.
do you ever get angry

No sabia lo que era, he buscado por HQ2X en leertelo y lo primero que he encontrado es que es un filtro usado principalmente... en emuladores... Madre de dios.

My understanding is that these do simple linear scaling, nearest neighbor (pixel scaling that they call "retro") and some kind of pixel fill in, hq2x style interpolation but I imagine they are trying to simplify the choice for non technical people. Or maybe sell multiple editions to folks...

I really thought we as a society had evolved past the horrible HQ2X illness

Seems like I was wrong
Just captured some Grandia 1, here it is compared to the remaster
October 15, 2025 at 3:41 PM

Don't even get why upscaling algorithms like HQ2X and xBR are associated with 240p assests, when they have a more practical application with higher resolution content to help clean up aliasing.

when I first started using emulators as a young'n, I thought smeary filters were the TRUE WAY. HQ2X all over the place. Now I want the pixels so sharp, so crisp that they will poke out my eyes
