#HTHH
On January 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano (HTHH) experienced an explosive eruption. Fantastic.
February 6, 2025 at 7:25 PM
More evidence that HTHH had little to do with the the recent global spike in temperatures.

Trolls superficially quite green
They often get into recycling 😬

Tonga HTHH eruption caused unique & significant warming event, in context, impact insubstantial compared to global forcing from climate change caused by humans

Effects of HTHH will fade
Global warming continues unabated

Did you know that Earth's most & 2nd most powerful/explosive #volcanic #eruptions of the century were submarine? We are discussing both the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (pictured) & the 2012 Havre eruptions, both in the Kingdom of Tonga, this week in my Submarine volcanoes course at #URIGSO 🧪🌋🌊

In mid-January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) volcano had one of the most massive eruptions ever recorded, destroying an island, generating a tsunami, and blanketing Tonga in ash. #eruption #fluiddynamics #physics #science #seismicwaves #seismology #volcano

HTHH was also an interesting one. There was some discussion about short term warming effects, which is unusual.

Zeke, the next LAM I'll come bully you if you don't stop writing SO₂ as SO2 🙃 Also glad to see your HTHH part now pointing out the likely negative contribution: we have a paper in review now showing how this is robust across different models: egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...
Multi-model analysis of the radiative impacts of the 2022 Hunga eruption indicates a significant cooling contribution from the volcanic plume
Abstract. On January 15, 2022, the Hunga volcano eruption released unprecedented amounts of water vapor into the atmosphere alongside a modest amount of SO2. In this work we analyse results from multi...

One of my professors got back from Lahaina (research on extended recovery and changes to communication and response planning post disaster) last night to teach class today. And back at a prior uni a physics prof of mine had to get all his classes covered to go to HTHH sampling for two weeks.

No amount of observation that Hunga Tonga's SO2 emission more than canceled out its H2O emission's impact on global temperatures will do.

@rarohde.bsky.social

Why do we keep repeating that HTHH could've caused excess '23 warming which we now know is not true.

Yes, that is the expectation. But GHG forcing continues to increase, we are near the peak of solar cycle 25 & there is still lots of water vapor in the stratosphere from the HTHH eruption. We will see. eos.org/research-spo....

(3/) Could this also be lingering effects from the HTHH water vapor in the stratosphere? Or is it just the lack of wave driving into the stratosphere (which is also very low)? It's hard to say for sure.

I think it could go below 1.2C.

After 1877-78 it basically returned to what it was. However, HTHH may be a factor. 1870s had no coverage at the poles, which may keep anomalies high. The late 1870s were a solar minimum, we’re entering a max. That might mean less chance of la nina & lower albedo.
December 27, 2024 at 7:21 PM
Record global temperatures linked to reduced planetary albedo from unusually low-cloud cover in the tropics and Northern mid-latitudes. But recent changes in marine ship emissions seem insufficient to account for all of this. What scope remains for HTHH impacts?

It's been a year since our study on the Hunga Tonga volcano came out (doi.org/10.1175/JCLI...), and given we're entering the period where our simulations suggested regional impacts, I thought I'd add a few thoughts: 0/5

I suppose another line of evidence will emerge once all of the modeling hthh has completed.

It isn’t looking likely models will show hthh skipped 22 and caused 23/24 warming either.

Did you present a doi I can check out?

The only time I found a comparison to the atomic bomb relevant was when NASA said the eruption of HTHH in Tonga had been equivalent to “100s of Hiroshimas”. I was in Tonga and worried there might be more, more powerful blows later. Then I was not, because it sounded “unbeatable”
September 23, 2025 at 5:09 PM
I am talking about the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai (HTHH) volcano in the South Pacific, which erupted on January 15, 2022.

In 2022 there were reports about the island having lost their battle to keep COVID out. At the time I remember thinking … they should really study it.
I’ll go dig & circle back!
December 16, 2025 at 3:57 PM
I pulled quotes from the articles and should have put them in quotes. I didn't write the papers.
I was trying to agree with you that HTHH had a small effect, although the most recent articles say the eruption had a very slight net *cooling* effect.
January 25, 2025 at 6:21 PM
I had too! Dr Dessler brought it up a couple months ago and I've had it open since.

The dept head for physics where I attended uni in 22/23 was on the team that launched radiosondes in the HTHH plume, and the initial study concluded the eruption induced warming, so I assumed that was still true.
