Downingia cuspidata.
A beautiful little native that normally inhabits the fascinating vernal pools of California. These are blooming in my greenhouse and will be moved to the pond in the next few weeks.

Castilleja foliolosa, a California native, is at its best this time of year in my yard. Slow to make the transition from post (9 months😵‍💫) but in these dark days I need my friends so this is for @direbecca.bsky.social and @rickehling.bsky.social.

I must be really crushing it with my forest clearing garden lately — a meadow fritillary was visiting today. These are less of a generalist yard butterfly and are more specialists of wet meadows. Uncommon in MA, I’d never actually seen one before. #habitatgardening #bugsky 🦋

New bug in our yard—Eastern Phantom Crane Fly. Looked very cool hopping and almost drifting along like it was a jellyfish in the ocean. #bugsky #habitatgardening

🌿 Removing a lawn isn’t just about getting rid of grass—it’s about making space for life

Every patch of native habitat, no matter how small, helps bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds thrive🦋🐝

Each replaced lawn is a step toward reimagining habitat

I need to show off this tree that you cannot tell I just planted two seconds ago as I did it flawlessly without disturbing or removing any of the pre-existing native flora making up the groundcover. #nativeplants #habitatgardening

Monarch feeding on Butterfly Weed in my garden.

I'll need to check to see if there are any eggs or larva. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves.

#HabitatGardening includes stumps & logs. As trees die, they become habitat for many species of insects, fungi, lichens, and mosses. These, in turn, serve as food for animals further up the food chain, which creates habitat. For details, read: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2024/08/snag...

#HabitatGardening We have 2 dead oaks in our yard. Since they are located where nothing will be harmed when they fall, we have left them, because snags, stumps, & logs provide habitat for birds & more. Occasionally, we need to pick up sticks. Read: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2024/08/snag...
