American witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is our latest native shrub to bloom – November is normal for these fanciful crinkles of gold to appear in deciduous woodlands. Found throughout Georgia, this shrub is in the Hamamelidaceae family which includes Fothergilla (witchalder). (1/2) #nativeplants

Fothergilla latifolia is from another mixed family: Some #Hamamelidaceae have showy petals, but in this species, the show is all stamens. #stamenflowers #stamen #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪🌱

The pseudanthium of Rhodoleia henryi (#Hamamelidaceae) “recreates” a flower via zygomorphic, peripheral flowers that have enlarged corollas. This species is from subtropical China. I suspect it is bird-pollinated. #pseudanthia #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Molecular data reveal that the sister lineage of Paeoniaceae is the clade of Altingiaceae, Hamamelidaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae & Daphniphyllaceae, but they differ from peonies in so many ways! For one, these families have winged seeds; Paeonia has fleshy seeds. #Paeoniaceae #peony #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Another nice thing is that there are Witch Hazels in bloom along 18th St NW outside the Dept of the Interior building.

(This reminds me of singing "Hamamelidaceae, Hamamelidaceae..." to the tune of the William Tell overture when I took tree class)

Another #Hamamelidaceae pollinated by fungus gnats: Hamamelis virginiana, pollinated mostly by Bradysia spp (#Sciaridae; #Diptera) but also small bees. When these plants flower there are few insects about, but H. viginiana provides a nectar reward. #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

Another species pollinated by fungus gnats: Disanthus cercidifolius (#Hamamelidaceae). It has the dull red flowers & short stamens typical of many plants pollinated by these tiny but important #pollinators. 📷: Ko Mochizuki CCBYNC4. #pollination #Diptera #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

The acers often take centre stage at this time of the year, but the witch hazel family, Hamamelidaceae, contains a number of fine shrubs for autumn tints - Hamamelis ‘Diane’, Fothergilla major, Corylopsis pauciflora and Parrotia persica. #fairviewyearround

The environment was a fluvial coastal plain, covered in forests dominated by conifers like Glyptostrobus, Taxodium, Sequoia and Sciadopitys (now all absent in Europe). Among the flowering plants, Nyssa, Myrica and different species of Colestraceae and Hamamelidaceae were common.
