Specially Haumea!

I remember when Gonggong was 2007 OR10, it was only named in 2020. Gonggong has a very well constrained shape and size, planetary scientists already refer to it and many other objects as dwarf planets. But the IAU? They haven't recognized a new dwarf planet since 2008, (Haumea and Makemake).

Alberga 4 planetas enanos: Plutón, Eris, Haumea y Makemake.

The IAU only recognizes Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris as dwarf planets. You may hear other objects referred to this way, (because they meet the requirements), but anything else is technically only a dwarf planet candidate.

We have found a new dwarf planet candidate!
If confirmed ED138 will join five dwarf planets recognized by the International Astronomical Union, which include Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Ceres, and Pluto.

It had been hard to spot because it lies in a crowded part of the sky, near the bright band of the Milky Way.

If confirmed, it would join just five officially recognized dwarf planets: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Haumea and Makemake.

To confirm it as a dwarf planet, infrared observations are needed to better measure its size.
If confirmed, it would join Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake and Ceres.

The five dwarf planets officially recognized in our Solar System are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. But the outer Solar System could hold many more waiting to be discovered. 🌑🪐🔭

(Sigh)
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are terrestrial planets.
Jupiter and Saturn are gas giant planets.
Uranus and Neptune are ice giant planets
Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris are dwarf planets.

See how it works?

OK, this is big.

The @rubinobservatory.org has detected its first candidate dwarf planet!

It's currently named 2026 ED138. When confirmed with follow-up observations, the number of known dwarf planets will go from 5 to 6.

Its orbit is shown with those of the other dwarf planets in this graphic.

Unlikely but still possible - it would've had to have hit something recently-ish. I know that at least one TNO is known to have one (Haumea):

Based on most TNOs having moons, it potentially has a companion! Excited for the eventual Hubble/Webb follow-up observations

Where do you get the number 5/6 from? Is that official IAU recognized dwarf planets? Because Pluto, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, Gonggong, Orcus, Sedna, (Ceres?), I'm already over 6 here...

Discussion in this thread suggests that #2026ED138 is likely in a 7:12 resonance, which is the same as Haumea's. That doesn't prove it's a Haumea family member, but if it is, its albedo could be high for a TNO, and its diameter on the small side of estimates.
Following the @rubinobservatory.org discovery announcement for #2026ED138, Sam Deen found two potential images of the object from 1954: groups.io/g/mpml/topic....

It was simply not recognized on the old Palomar plates.

It is a dwarf planet candidate; if confirmed, it will be considered one of the largest of its kind and the sixth officially recognized in the Solar System (alongside Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake).

cool, Pluto's got company. dwarf planet candidate, if confirmed, ranks among the largest dwarf planets ever found. Nice win for 5 months in. https://rubinobservatory.org/news/rubin-first-dwarf-planet-candidate

Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Haumea and Makemake are the ones everyone agrees about (except the people who consider Pluto a real planet and the people who classify everything that's ball shaped as a planet). The other five are more debated but often also considered as dwarf planets.

Yes. And Haumea is 60% of their size.

ED138 wasn't easy to find, but the newly discovered dwarf planet will soon be joined with more LSST discoveries as we survey the southern sky for a 10 year period. Missions one day to Makemake, Haumea and other dwarfs? Let's hope so. www.centauri-dreams.org/2026/10/28/e...

If future observations confirm the discovery, ED138 will join a group currently made up of five dwarf planets that have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union, or IAU: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.
