I've only watched episode 1, but as it plays out with Danzig's track Mother, some guy already got cut in half with a steel hawser, and there are tentacles involved, I hereby recommend Below, (aquatic based horror thriller) mini series on Netflix.

Danzig Performing
Alt: Glen Danzig, of the band Danzig (and Misfits, and Samhain), often referred to as Evil Elvis, a short muscled white guy with long black hair and big sideburns, in a black mesh vest, wearing a huge inverted cross with a horned animal skull on it, judging by the backdrop, probably from the '92 How The Gods Kill album/tour.

And different bits of cordage on a tall ship have different directions of twist (hawser laid, and cable laid, depending on diameter; because the base yarns (a single twist of cordage) was standard; and different masses of "rope" were needed for different functions (e.g. a sheet vs. a spring cable).

Caught unawares on the morning tide: a turn-of-the-century dockworker lashings timber on a misty pier, rendered with the harsh contrast and darkroom grit of a glass plate negative.

The Timber Tally at Slip Four
An elderly dockyard tallyman knots a damp hemp hawser around a stack of rough-hewn pine planks beside a foggy slipway. Taken with a hidden detective camera on a glass plate negative, the snapshot shows the stark, gritty contrast of turn-of-the-century social realism. Burnt-in darkroom edges, deep soot-black shadows, a hairline emulsion scratch, and a faint smudge mark the aged monochrome print.

I don't know, what does everyone else think? To me, the way you can tell that O'Brian knows what he's talking about when he goes on about the hawser-laid cable or whatever, is more important than the technical accuracy, because it builds a cohesive world that you can visualise.

the solution, clearly, is to become strong enough to flex my neck muscles once and snap the rope like an overstressed hawser while the popeye spinach jingle plays

I’m not convinced by the “it’s a pun on a word for a hawser” interpretation either, but at least that doesn’t either deny it’s a metaphor or try to change the plain meaning.

The end of the hawser-like rope winding through these intricacies, was then conducted to the windlass, and the huge lower block of the tackles was swung over the whale; to this block the great blubber hook, weighing some one hundred pounds, was attached.
