The Primarchs should never have returned. The setting is rapidly moving away from its characteristic grim darkness and embracing an MCU-like comic book "Herohammer" style that has a much stronger mainstream commercial appeal, but is far removed from what made 40k so distinct originally.

Last page from the Dwarfs Army Book (WHFB, 4th Edition).
Commonly referred to as “Red Hammer” (due to the heavy use of red-painted miniatures) or “Herohammer” (due to the overwhelming impact heroes had on the battlefield).
Circa 1993–1994

Quick question: I know 2nd ed 40k was a big 'HeroHammer, give your characters ludicrous wargear and watch them murder whole units' time, but was 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy the same deal?
Looking at the books it always feels like it's an obvious thing that would happen, but I wasn't there.

The two evil CoS airship armies meet at last 😏
Floyde’s of Aqshy (herohammer) and the Angankorian Expedition (starter boxes) meet in a hidden cleft high in the mountains.

my colonel for the same force. because i don't have that many models (old models are very expensive and i have to paint fast!), i decided to herohammer a little with her and just completely kit her out. i even paid extra points for a tactical rock

Yeah… I think I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do a Sea Guard army.
I’m gonna keep them really really small and tight and elite and herohammer though, so I can still do my Wood Elfs later in the year. Like just the bare minimum kits, and most of my points on characters and monsters.

I suspect it will be much more Herohammer in focus, which there might be a niche for.

Interested to hear what everyone's niche #Warhammer hobby enthusiasms are! For me, I spend most of my internal world in WFB 5th Edition #Herohammer but with the 4th edition army books. I love the rules changes between 4th and 5th but also love the older metal models and Undead Army Book.

From Rufus - 4th and 5th both did HeroHammer even more so than 40k.

I started a substack dedicated to my passion for #Warhammer 5th Edition #Herohammer! My first post is about why I like it.
Why Warhammer 5th Edition?
An attempt to understand why Warhammer, and the Hero-Hammer era in particular, has never quite let go of me.
