The "echo chambers" narrative completely misses how this works. It isn't some collective closed-mindedness of opinion that eliminates heterodoxy, but rather that entirely different facts are given to different groups of people. Heterodoxy would at least sort of require us to share the same reality.
It's really important people understand that half of the country lives on a different planet. Highlighted is a real article that ran in November, a full 16 months after the event. The article was served to my bot and saved in a dataset I try not to look at because, well, it looks like this.

Is it still heterodoxy when it's being pushed from the top by the world's most powerful people?
NEW: “CBS Evening News” producer Alicia Hastey sends a bombshell farewell note:

Stories are “evaluated not just on their journalistic merit but on whether they conform to a shifting set of ideological expectations.”

as correct as michael is here this is the inverse of how it works in the world of elite commentary, where a willingness to entertain race science somehow makes you more credible for your "heterodoxy" (see: charles murray)
imo, if someone believes some races or ethnicities are genetically inferior to others, that person has revealed a weakness of mind and character that casts extreme if not irrefutable doubt on their other ideas. why would i expect them to use more rigor on, eg, housing than they do on human nature?

Oh yeah man, Trump’s GOP is famously “chill and friendly to heterodoxy.” Listen to yourself
This is a big country — hundreds of millions of people — with just two parties.

Everyone ends up voting for a presidential candidate they disagree with about a lot of stuff.

Whichever coalition positions itself as more chill and friendly to heterodoxy will win almost by default.

it is so interesting to me how “heterodoxy” is this shorthand for “sophisticated” for so many people

not surprising at all but it is very funny to have hard evidence that the people crowing about intellectual diversity and heterodoxy cooked their brains in a soup made by a guy who proudly admits he’s grooming right wing chuds lol
Wish I could say I was surprised that the Harper's letter group chat also included chris fucking rufo

/3 Nobody at Bluesky is a freethinker. Nobody at Bluesky is a contrarian. Nobody at Bluesky has heterodoxy, or as my therapist insisted on calling it when I still had a job and therefore health insurance, borderline personality disorder.

It's the smallest grievance, but I hate the stink these people have left on the word "heterodox."
incredible stuff

Orthodoxy is my doxy. Heterodoxy is the other fellow's doxy.

There is something quite morbidly funny in how we've spent a decade consumed with elite discourse on "political correctedness" and the vital need for "heterodoxy", and yet media coverage remains absolutely shaped by hegemonic ideas that it is understood can never be named or challenged.
I told you federal jobs are a shorthand for minority employment for the Right.

its really hard for orgs like FIRE to understand that Trump II has profoundly fucked the movement for heterodoxy in higher education and specifically academic conservatives

enough with these inaccessible ideological labels like “moderate” and “progressive” that voters don’t understand, let’s use a word that even joe plumber understands: “heterodoxy” — or even better, “heterogeneous.” that’s a strategy the average american can get behind!

Not everyone who says to me "Woke! Woke!" will enter the kingdom of heterodoxy.

Anyways it is interesting that calls for heterodoxy and “viewpoint diversity“ rarely result in pushing for funding the most ideological heterodox and contentious spaces, such as Black studies and Gender studies.

You have to suck up to them and tell them they’re great even if they’re complete morons with no idea what they’re doing and only have the job because they kissed some rich idiot’s ass. It’s called heterodoxy
Scott Pelley has been fired by new 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton.

It's amazing how diversity of opinion and thought heterodoxy just means "have more Nazi shit, scientific racism, and phrenology"

It's always that.

being the ventriloquist dummy for a bunch of billionaire weirdies is I guess a form of heterodoxy

notice how these people who were formerly all-in on the mythical power of ideological moderation have changed their tack and entire organizational orientation after discovering the wisdom of the ancients that most voters are not ideological at all. now it’s all about “heterodoxy.”

just decade after benighted decade of racists rebranding eugenics thinking as heterodoxy and people who knew better going along with it bc it’s so gauche to be angry all the time do calm down dear

Some meant all the heterodoxy and free speech stuff as "fight the left," and others really meant it. We're finding out who's who.
