#Hiddencurriculum is info you don’t have or don’t understand. If - like me - you can take things literally, advice to “do the best you can“ will harm you more than it helps. So. What does it mean to “do the best you can”? christinagessler.substack.com/p/setting-re...

Generous thread describing how pay for authors works.

#HiddenCurriculum
So apropos of nothing in particular, let’s talk about media tie-in novel pay vs. original work pay, shall we?

Let’s say you write a novel. It’s set in your own world, your own characters, and titled The Original. You get a book deal! Look at you go!

Thank you for sharing this! #hiddencurriculum Important tip for junior faculty (or all career levels!?) 👉
If you are travelling (eg to conferences) reach out to colleagues in nearby labs and offer to give a talk. This is something I didnt realise people did until quite late in my career.

Working with applicants on admission "personal narratives"
I see the same issues crop up - too much storytelling, not enough explicit "why I'm right for grad school & why grad school is right for me". Personal statements should actually be a persuasive thesis.

A really self-critical, considered chapter on the quandries of education in a context in denial of its legacies. I learnt so much! And from the DMs on other platforms, so have many others!

Specialty disrespect is a #microaggression & form of #hiddencurriculum - all to often I 👂#medicalstudents & #residents being told “you’re to smart for x,y” hospitalist colleague shared that surgical specialty would not do procedure until she called in specialist 🙄 #IMproud

Just talked to a student about #HiddenCurriculum, like, do all professors do research and teaching? Do we get paid on grants alone? What is service in academia and how much do we have to do?

My question for #academiasky: What resources do you share with students interested in these things? 🧪🧫

#Hiddencurriculum question for researchers: a friend asked if there is a blog or paper about how different funding agencies (NSF, NIH, USDA, NOAA, foundations, etc) review/rank/fund proposals. Anyone know of any? #academicsky 🧫🧪

Start of term. Let’s talk #HiddenCurriculum
It breaks my heart when students struggle without knowing what help is available, and what journeys other students are on. Let’s be kind to one another while we navigate our individual aca pathways

Navigating conferences when you feel like an outsider is part of the #HiddenCurriculum I want us to address clearly and directly. I'm so pleased the other exec members supported this move. If you're new, or your student is coming along, please take us up on it!

Academics, I have a #HiddenCurriculum question: Does having an ugly CV (12pt Times, minimal whitespace), make you look More Serious.
