On this day in 1865, Henry Highland Garnet delivered a sermon in the U.S. House of Representatives while it was not in session, becoming the first African American to speak in that chamber on the occasion of Congress's passage on January 31 of the Thirteenth Amendment.

Jews ≠ Canaanites. They emerged after Canaanites as a distinct group. Palestine has always been home to many peoples—Canaanites, Philistines, Jews, Romans, Arabs. Acknowledging Palestinian identity doesn’t erase Jewish roots. But claiming Jews “progenitor” all history does. #HistoryForAll #palestine
