#Hofstadter
More than 60 years ago, Hofstadter wrote this article. It stands up pretty well.

I think a lot about this quote from Anaïs Nin’s diary from 1939-1944:

“America is in even greater danger because of its cult of toughness, its hatred of sensitivity, and someday it may have to pay a price for this, because atrophy of feeling creates criminals”.

“If the time shall ever come,” wrote a small-town Midwestern editor in 1836, “when this mighty fabric shall totter … the cause will be found in the ignorance of the people.”

In 1974, the mathematician Douglas Hofstadter used a graphing calculator to find a fractal pattern in how electrons behave. His adviser dismissed it as numerology. The fractal, called the Hofstadter butterfly, is now known to be a real-life phenomenon. www.quantamagazine.org/ten-martini-...

Not going to name names, but a lot of academic historians owe Richard Hofstadter an apology.

The Democrats’ pro-union strategy has been a bust
Despite Joe Biden’s historically pro-union policies, the Democrats’ share of the union vote is falling.

And I'd be grossly remiss in not name-checking The Paranoid Style In American Politics by Richard Hofstadter, written in the ancient times of 1964, yet startlingly relevant and fresh even today (harpers.org/archive/1964...).

It's also hard to know if this is just a 2025 reiteration of the paranoid political tradition Richard Hofstadter described as "pseudo-conservatism" back in the 1950s. bsky.app/profile/seth...
Richard Hofstadter in 1954, writing about the "rightist" dissenter of the 1950s. "He believes himself to be living in a world in which he is spied upon, plotted against, betrayed, and very likely destined for total ruin. He feels that his liberties have been arbitrarily and outrageously invaded..."
