#Hofstadter
It's aimed at folks who vaguely remember reading Hofstadter
my twitter feed is all these people saying that AI might be conscious, but instead of making a particular case for that, they just say, well u know I mean consciousness is pretty weird. how do u know people are conscious. robots COULD be conscious, etc. And I wonder who this is persuasive for

Richard Hofstadter still illuminates the asymmetry between liberals” & the “right.” We don’t share reality; we don’t share the same understanding of politics. You can’t invite someone to eat lunch and discuss differences if they don’t sincerely believe in food or understand good-faith discussion.

"The strange loop notion is this idea that we need in order to survive in this world to perceive things in a very simplified way."

This brings me back to Hofstadter (shocking, I know); the idea that a system doesn't have to step outside itself to talk about itself. Its own symbols can stand for statements about those symbols, and suddenly the object level and meta level are tangled together.

Ah, so Sabine Hofstadter is a happy little Transphobe. She will crow from the rooftops about not taking money to tell you AI is dangerous but is happy to promote discredited garbage like the Cass Report and "Rapid Onset Dysphoria" like a good little AFD stooge. Just watch, the grift will begin

Douglas Hofstadter offers a hypothesis. What is important here, according to him, is repeated analogy. He goes quite far with this thesis and suggests that analogy is an engine of cognition and underlies many important processes, one of which is generalization/abstraction.

We agreed that generalization was necessary, even essential for adaptive functioning in biological organisms and not only in them. Without an ability to generalize, we'd be utterly dysfunctional.

Again, mental and contextual association of two experiences. Central concept both in Freud's technique of psychoanalysis and in Hofstadter's work.
