FOV matters so much in VR, social especially. The new megacorp glasses might be interesting for other reasons but that thing has an FOV closer to a Hololens.

Also the revival of VR/AR.
Granted, that was tied to the Metaverse in many ways. But as someone whose job briefly entailed trying to find educational uses for 55 Hololens 2 headsets bought AFTER Microsoft stopped development of the Hololens 3, I remember that scam well.

this was one of the standout titles for microsofts ar machine the hololens which after its commercial failure got repurposed into military tech theres a decent chance some members of the us army were trained on young conker

Fuck I totally forgot about Windows Mixed Reality outside of hololens, look at how many headsets they made. Probably the biggest L of any company involved. I hear there's a Steam driver people like though.

I think a lot about Project Maven and its aftermath, when in 2018 Google workers exposed and (at least temporarily) got Google to abandon a project in military drone targeting AI & put out a set of Ethical AI Principles. (Microsoft faced similar with the HoloLens). Hard to sell NatSec under Trump 1
i think the big middle event between george floyd protests and covid that accelerated this hard right turn in elite circles was tech employees using slack to stage walk-outs and force concessions from management. tech bosses got a first whiff of organized labor's power and started reading mein kampf
