World Athletics has announced that India, Kazakhstan, and China will host major global athletics events between 2028 and 2030 as part of its strategy to expand the sport in emerging markets. During the 240th World Athletics Council Meeting held in Toruń, Poland, Odisha in India was chosen to host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships, while Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, will host the 2030 edition. Additionally, Hefei, China, will stage the 2028 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships. These decisions aim to strengthen athletics’ global reach and inspire new generations of athletes in regions with growing sports infrastructure and engagement. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised Poland’s continued contribution to athletics and emphasized that the new host locations align with the organization’s goal of promoting the sport worldwide. Odisha’s Chief Minister highlighted the state’s decade-long investment in sporting infrastructure and its vision to make sports a key pillar of development. Similarly, Kazakhstan’s Athletics Federation expressed gratitude and commitment to delivering a top-tier global event. In China, the Hefei organizing committee pledged to ensure high standards in hosting the race walking championship as part of the country’s four-year athletics roadmap. The Council also approved new qualification principles for upcoming global competitions, adjustments to eligibility and transfer-of-allegiance regulations, and updates to technical and shoe regulations to enhance fairness and operational consistency ahead of major championships like Beijing 2027 and LA 2028.
