#Hydrology
I drove through Northern Arizona today on my way back home and I have never seen water like this. An exceptional flood event is currently happening in this normally dry state. These are mesquite trees in the middle of Carrizo Creek, which is an intermittent stream. #hydrology

He absolutely hates medical stuff, so not medicine. Something science. Changes week to week. Meteorology, botany, xenomorphology, engineering, hydrology

Hydrology Paper of the Day @peatymike.bsky.social and colleagues on how natural freshwater reduces the toxic effects of polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics: tests involving Daphnia magna life history traits, and understanding differences due to water types and nanoplastic concentrations.
Enjoyed playing a small role (DOM analysis) in this paper, where we found the toxicity of nanoplastics to water fleas was reduced in natural waters vs artificial freshwater. In natural, high DOM waters, NPs did not aggregate and were not toxic.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @mrdjournal.bsky.social on how repeat photographs of the Banff National Park area in the Mountain Legacy Project archive can support Indigenous-led land management: visual understandings of place, culture, and geography; landscape analysis; and Îyârhe Nakoda narratives.
Historical and repeat photographs are an excellent medium for knowledge sharing and collaboration to support Indigenous land stewardship. Read how it works in the article by Claire Wright and coauthors: doi.org/10.1659/mrd....

It's not just about climate chaos.
It's also about landscape chaos.
The damage we do to the land's hydrology is layered on top of the damage we do to the atmosphere.
Our mismanagement of land commits us to a cycle of flood and drought.
We can change this, as explained here.
Please read. Thanks.
We need to calm the flood-drought climate whiplash 🌦️

In the national conversation around climate resilience, Britain’s water crisis is almost always framed as two separate emergencies.

Different topography and soil factors make a world of difference for hydrology!

This is something closer to flash flood alley (thin topsoil over limestone) than an east coast flood situation. Plus the effects of dry clime and persistent drought on what little soil there is limiting absorption.

I think so. I love the nature here, the wildlife. I love learning about how this land was formed, about it's geology and hydrology. I love the history here and especially the way the Native Americans here lived. I never would have known about the many ways to use native plants here or how to >>>

Hydrology Paper of the Day @trevorcaughlin.bsky.social on UAV remote sensing for rangeland plant species classification: locations in Oregon and Idaho imaged using an RGB sensor; ground truth data; machine learning for plant crown classification; and landscape-scale model performance.
New paper! We used drones + ensemble models to map 18 plant species in threatened sagebrush steppe with >90% accuracy. Low-cost RGB cameras perform nearly as well as multispec: good news for monitoring biodiversity in these landscapes. read it here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ra... #drones #sagebrush #UAV

i studied geology, hydrology, and astrophysics at one point. chemistry was a fun set of classes. equations are easy as shit when you know what you're supposed to plug where and what order to do stuff in

economics math makes my brain glaze over within 10 seconds going "FAKE AND NOT WORTH IT"

Intrinsic beauty. A lifetime of learning from just what you can see - biology, hydrology, climatology, KREBS cycle, monocultural plants, biome diversity, symmetry, stimulus/response, chemistry, physics, geology - that land is a PHd waiting to be learned.

very honored to be selected to serve on the hydrosphere panel for the National Academies/NASA decadal survey for Earth Science! www.nationalacademies.org/projects/CAS... and get a chance to shape what gets funded/studied and how it gets prioritized!
Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space 2028-2037 (ESAS 2028): Panel on Continental Hydrology, Oceanography, and Water Cycles (“Hydrosphere”)
The Panel on Continental Hydrology, Physical Oceanography, and Water Cycles (“Hydrosphere”) is one of five science panels addressing the major domains of Earth system science. For organizational simplicity, the science panels will be structured broadly around the Earth science “spheres” supported by NASA’s Earth System Science Research Program. Within the scope of the hydrosphere sphere, the panel will identify the highest-priority science goals for 2028–2037 and develop potential implementation options for the survey committee’s consideration. The panel will also respond to other requests for information from the survey committee.
