Saw this beautiful foamy beech today in the forest. This is caused by stemflow, water runoff along the stem of the #tree, and the chemicals on the bark the water collects, creating a soapy foam.

'Bark Bubbles'

Foamy stemflow on a tree trunk is a natural phenomenon apparently - see #AltText

Spied some this afternoon. If you look closely you'll see me reflected in lots of bubbles!

🌳💧 Urban trees as stormwater allies?

Stemflow (rainwater running down tree trunks) could be tapped to reduce runoff and irrigate city gardens.

With low-cost retrofits, cities can divert this nutrient-rich water to where it's needed most.

A foaming tree - this one a sweet chestnut. Soapy stemflow like this isn't uncommon when it rains after drought, & tends to be foamy in trees with deep bark grooves which create turbulence. Effectively plant chemicals, pollutants & insect residues are being washed away.

Science Advent 12 | This book chapter came from the skeleton of a manuscript from 2021. This chapter reviews monitoring strategies to measure N deposition using wet and dry deposition, (2) throughfall, stemflow, and bulk deposition, and (3) biomonitoring of lichens and mosses across the globe.
Effects of nitrogen deposition on soil nitrogen transformations in forest ecosystems
Nitrogen (N) deposition can alter N availability, soil pH, and microbial activity and composition in soils, which directly and indirectly affects soil…
