love when there's an article about how life is sustainable in the superheated waters surrounding a hydrothermal volcanic fissure on the ocean floor and then like six paragraphs in you find out the author's parents are chemosynthetic bacteria 🙄

Yup. This was literally me. Funded by Nautilus Minerals to do baseline environmental impact assessment for a hydrothermal vent mine. Went in cautiously optimistic. Came out concluding there's no feasible path forward for mining a hydrothermal vent at any scale.
It's wild that all my colleagues who are funded by a deep sea mining company to research the topic ultimately conclude that we shouldn't mine the deep sea.

We should stop seeing the ocean as a place to exploit instead of a place of wonder and beauty and an essential part of our life support system.

A new executive order pits the United States against the rest of the world over the question of who can exploit mineral resources in shared waters.

I'm back from the field, a bit shaken by the scale of what a small hydrothermal explosion can do. A thread on Black Diamond Pool, the site of today's hydrothermal explosion, to come later tonight. ⚒️

Sometimes I like to draw a really hot bath and shut out the lights and pretend to be one of those deep sea worms that lives on hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean. I call it my hot worm time.

Yellowstone's geology staff have found over 20,000 pieces of trash so far this year in hydrothermal areas.

Some salvaged items include over 280 hats, dozens of camera lens covers — and even six Invisalign retainers.
The weird trash that Yellowstone geologists retrieve from geysers
This year, visitors have dropped pink slime, fake nails and retainers into the national park’s hydrothermal attractions.

Hydrothermal vents were UNKNOWN to scientists until the 1970s. Most Americans TODAY weren't taught there were cities in the Americas before Columbus.

We're a society of preschoolers still arguing about whether Santa is real & which other kids are allowed to have long hair & use the pink crayons.

"Scientists" believe life began in underwater hydrothermal vents 4 billion years ago. I believe it began at the Denny's off the interstate in Toledo Ohio in 1956. I don't make fun of their theory and yet they constantly ridicule mine. And that's what's wrong with our so-called elites

The deep ocean vents are absolutely incredible. Packed with chemo-synthesizing organisms. the ecosystem is not dependent on sunshine but on the minerals carried by the hydrothermal vents and the bacteria who reduce them to power their biological processes.
